Job Overview: The Principal position within the Monitoring team at the Environment and Sustainability Department is a critical role that involves overseeing the implementation of the Bank’s Environmental and Social Policy commitments. The Principal will be responsible for conducting thorough environmental and social monitoring of various projects, particularly those that are complex and high-risk. This role requires a proactive approach to analyzing project portfolios, identifying trends, and advocating for continuous improvement in monitoring processes. The Principal will also engage with key external stakeholders, including clients, government representatives, local communities, and civil society organizations, to build productive relationships that support project success. This position demands a high level of expertise in environmental and social appraisal and monitoring, as well as the ability to provide specialist input to a range of projects across different sectors. The Principal will work closely with Associate Directors and Heads of Sector to ensure compliance with the Bank's Environmental and Social Policy and to contribute to the overall success of the Bank's initiatives in Turkiye and the Caucasus region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Principal will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing specialist input to projects and Technical Cooperation initiatives, particularly those that are complex and high-risk; managing delivery of specific sub-projects or tasks; conducting assessments of Environmental and Social Policy compliance; analyzing environmental and social risks and impacts; coordinating project and consultant teams; developing methodologies for monitoring and reporting; preparing internal and external publications; representing the ESD at various meetings and events; supporting capacity-building initiatives; mentoring and coaching staff; and contributing to the continuous improvement of internal processes. The Principal will also be responsible for preparing detailed reports on the Bank’s monitoring approach and methodologies, ensuring that all activities align with the Bank's Behavioral Competencies and Corporate Behaviors.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Principal position must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks and impacts is essential, along with knowledge of international environmental, social, and climate standards. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies, as well as excellent knowledge of environmental and social thematic policy areas, is required. Strong interpersonal skills, effective time management, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are crucial. Candidates must also demonstrate excellent written and spoken English, with familiarity in a language of the EBRD countries of operations being advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field. Candidates with comparable professional experience in relevant areas may also be considered. The role demands a strong understanding of environmental and social issues, as well as the ability to apply this knowledge to the assessment of investment projects.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in project management, particularly in leading or contributing to multi-disciplinary teams. A background in assessing environmental and social risks and impacts of various projects and sectors is essential. Candidates should also have experience in negotiating and influencing stakeholders, as well as a track record of mentoring and coaching less experienced staff.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Familiarity with a language spoken in the EBRD countries of operations is considered advantageous. For appointments in resident offices, local language fluency will be required to effectively engage with stakeholders and clients.
Additional Notes: This position is a fixed-term contract lasting for 2 years. The EBRD promotes a flexible working environment, expecting employees to attend the office 50% of their working time.
