Job Overview:
The Interpreter/Translator position at UNODC is crucial for facilitating effective communication between English and Arabic speakers within the organization and its partners. The incumbent will play a key role in supporting training initiatives for the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and other stakeholders involved in drug control and crime prevention. This position requires a high level of proficiency in both languages, as the incumbent will be responsible for interpreting during meetings and workshops, as well as translating written materials. The role demands not only linguistic skills but also an understanding of the technical content related to drug control and criminal justice reform. The incumbent will work closely with UNODC staff and external partners, ensuring that all communications are clear, accurate, and culturally sensitive. This position is vital for the success of UNODC's initiatives in Iraq, as it directly impacts the effectiveness of training and collaboration with local authorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Interpreter/Translator will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Providing simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from Arabic to English and vice versa during meetings, workshops, and training sessions with governmental counterparts.
  • Translating written documents, training materials, reports, and correspondence, ensuring accuracy and adherence to UN terminology and standards.
  • Facilitating communication during technical trainings to ensure national partners can fully engage with the content.
  • Strengthening collaboration with national counterparts through precise and culturally sensitive interpretation.
  • Offering timely language support across UNODC activities to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Supporting the supervisor with additional tasks as required, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to the Programme Office's needs.
  • Engaging proactively with UNODC staff and external partners to share knowledge and ensure work harmonization.
  • Analyzing evidence and seeking guidance to adhere to UNODC guidelines in all translation and interpretation tasks.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in translation and interpretation, with a proven ability to work in high-pressure environments. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a deep understanding of the cultural nuances between Arabic and English. Familiarity with UN terminology and standards is highly desirable. The position requires a commitment to professionalism and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams. Educational Background:

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in translation and interpretation, particularly in a context related to international organizations or governmental agencies. Experience working in the field of drug control, crime prevention, or criminal justice reform is highly desirable. The ability to demonstrate a track record of successful communication in high-stakes environments will be a significant asset.

Languages:
Fluency in both Arabic and English is mandatory, with a strong emphasis on technical vocabulary related to law enforcement and criminal justice. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region or UN operations would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Baghdad, Iraq. The UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is USD 1724.16, with additional allowances for danger and hardship. The contract includes an entry lump sum, exit allowance, annual and learning leaves, medical and life insurance, and access to various learning platforms. This role is not a salaried position but aims to provide a basic, adequate, and safe lifestyle for the volunteer.
