Job Overview:
The Project Support Officer will work under the supervision of the GMCP Programme Coordinator for the Mediterranean, providing essential technical, analytical, and programmatic support to the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP). This role involves designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating program activities aligned with UNODC priorities and regional operational realities. The officer will assess the technical assistance and capacity-building needs of maritime law enforcement and criminal justice authorities, contributing to the development of sustainable strategies to combat maritime crime. The position requires conducting research on illicit trafficking and maritime crime trends, drafting reports, and providing support for various program activities, including workshops and training events. The officer will also assist in administrative, procurement, and financial processes related to GMCP activities, ensuring compliance with UN financial regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Project Support Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
  • Providing substantive support for the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of GMCP activities.
  • Identifying and analyzing technical assistance needs of maritime law enforcement and criminal justice authorities.
  • Supporting project planning and management processes, including budget revisions and workplan preparation.
  • Conducting research on maritime crime trends and synthesizing findings for program planning.
  • Contributing to policy coordination and evaluation functions.
  • Drafting and reviewing written outputs such as reports and analytical notes.
  • Organizing consultative meetings and training events.
  • Supporting administrative and financial processes related to GMCP activities.

  • Performing other related duties as required to support GMCP objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in maritime law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field. They should demonstrate excellent analytical and technical skills, with the ability to conduct research and synthesize complex information. Strong communication skills are essential, as the role involves drafting reports and engaging with various stakeholders. The ideal candidate should also have experience in project management and a solid understanding of UNODC's mission and objectives. Additionally, candidates should exhibit adaptability, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required, typically a master's degree in law, international relations, criminal justice, or a related field. Candidates with a bachelor's degree combined with extensive relevant experience may also be considered. A strong academic foundation in maritime law or international law is advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in maritime law enforcement, criminal justice, or international development. Experience working with UN agencies or similar organizations is highly desirable. Proven experience in project management, capacity building, and technical assistance in the context of maritime crime is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in Arabic and French is highly desirable. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer role with the UN International Expert Volunteer program. The contract duration and specific terms will be outlined upon selection. The position is full-time, and the volunteer will receive a living allowance of approximately USD 3975.92 per month, along with a one-time entry lump-sum payment of USD 3500 and an exit lump-sum upon completion of the contract. Medical and life insurance coverage is provided, along with access to training resources through the UNV E-Campus.
