The United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) in Brussels is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs). Established to promote public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations, UNRIC disseminates information materials to local audiences in their languages. The Centre engages with various partners, including civil society, media, public institutions, and academia, to communicate the values and actions of the UN in building a more peaceful and sustainable world. UNRIC covers 22 countries and operates in 13 languages, with a team of nine Desk Officers responsible for designated areas.

Job Overview:
The Public intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Information Intern position is located within the Information Centres Service (ICS) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC) at UNRIC. The intern will work under the direct supervision of a Desk Officer and will be involved in various tasks that support the mission of UNRIC. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in public information and communication within the UN framework. Interns will assist in writing and translating articles for the UNRIC website, updating social media accounts, media monitoring, liaising with civil society and NGOs, and organizing events related to the UN's work. This role is crucial for enhancing the visibility of the UN's efforts and engaging with local communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's duties will include:
  • Assisting in writing and translating articles for the UNRIC website to ensure accurate and engaging content.
  • Updating and managing social media accounts, including drafting and editing posts to promote UNRIC activities.
  • Supporting the Desk Officer in media monitoring to track relevant news and developments.
  • Liaising with civil society organizations, academia, and NGOs to foster collaboration and communication.
  • Assisting in the organization of events that highlight the UN's work in relevant countries, ensuring effective planning and execution.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Desk Officer to support the overall mission of UNRIC.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: a. Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or b. Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Candidates must also show the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's degree program. This educational background is essential to ensure that interns possess the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the UNRIC's mission and activities.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, a demonstrated interest in international relations, communications, or public information is highly desirable. Interns should be prepared to engage in a fast-paced environment and adapt to the dynamic nature of the UN's work.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position. Additionally, fluency in one or more of the following languages is required: Danish, Dutch, French, Greek, Italian, Norwegian (Bokmål and Nynorsk), or Portuguese. Proficiency in multiple languages will enhance the intern's ability to communicate effectively within the diverse environment of the UN.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of five days a week, totaling 35 hours. Interns may work in-person, remotely, or in a hybrid format, depending on the needs of the Department and the intern's availability. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. It is important for non-citizens or non-permanent residents to secure the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
