Job Overview: The UN VolunteerNurse will be part of the UNAMA Medical Section, which is responsible for providing reliable, client-oriented, cost-efficient, and prompt primary health care to all personnel from participating UN entities. The nurse will work under the direct supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and will be expected to deliver safe, timely, and professional nursing care to patients at the UNAMA medical clinic. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including clinical nursing care, patient management, nursing supervision, coordination, quality assurance, emergency preparedness, medication management, and collaboration with other medical staff. The nurse will also be involved in health promotion, patient counseling, and health education, ensuring that the health needs of UN personnel are met effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Nursing Care and Patient Management: Provide safe and professional nursing care, administer medications, monitor patients’ conditions, manage intravenous lines, maintain nursing records, and communicate findings to physicians. Attend to patients, ensure treatment is carried out as directed, and provide health education.
Nursing Supervision, Coordination, and Quality Assurance: Supervise nursing activities, evaluate care quality, identify learning needs, and contribute to training. Serve as a role model for nursing personnel and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Emergency Preparedness and Response Readiness: Maintain emergency preparedness, ensure availability of emergency medications and equipment, and participate in emergency drills.
Medication Management and Medical Logistics Support: Dispense medications, monitor stock levels, and assist in inventory control.
Collaboration and Team Support: Work closely with other medical staff to ensure integrated patient care.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate should possess a valid nursing license and have a strong understanding of nursing practices and protocols. They should demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and leadership abilities. The candidate must also have the ability to work effectively in a team and adapt to changing situations in a challenging environment.
Educational Background: A degree in nursing or a related field is required. Additional certifications in emergency care or specialized nursing fields would be advantageous. Continuous professional development and training in nursing practices are encouraged.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2-3 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in a primary health care setting or emergency response. Experience working in international organizations or in conflict-affected areas is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages such as Dari or Pashto would be an asset, as it would facilitate communication with local patients and staff.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Kabul, Afghanistan, which is classified as a hardship duty station due to volatile security conditions. UN volunteers will be provided with safe accommodation and access to amenities within the UNOCA compound. The role is full-time, and volunteers are encouraged to bring personal items that may not be readily available in the local area. The living conditions include furnished accommodations with essential amenities, and there are facilities for recreation and social interaction.
