Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is recognized as the world's leading environmental authority, established to set the global environmental agenda and promote the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. UNEP serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment, focusing on various environmental issues and providing guidance to countries and organizations. The Abidjan Convention, which UNEP administers through its Secretariat based in Abidjan, was established in 1981 and covers the Atlantic Ocean from Mauritania to South Africa, encompassing a coastline of over 14,000 km. The Convention aims to provide a regional cooperation framework for the protection, management, and development of the marine and coastal environment in the southeastern Atlantic region, which is home to ecologically significant ecosystems that are vital for fisheries, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of millions of coastal residents. However, these ecosystems face increasing threats from climate change, pollution, and human activities, necessitating a strong focus on enhancing coastal resilience and regional capacity.

Job Overview:
The Knowledge Management Coordinator will play a pivotal role in leading the formulation and implementation of regional initiatives aimed at enhancing marine and coastal resilience. This position is aligned with the protocols of the Abidjan Convention, focusing on pollution control, mangrove management, and integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). The Coordinator will support harmonization and cooperation among Contracting Parties by promoting joint initiatives and regional standards to address land-based pollution and marine pollution risks. The role involves guiding restoration and conservation programs, particularly emphasizing critical habitats such as mangroves and lagoons, while promoting nature-based solutions and climate-resilient coastal infrastructure. The Coordinator will also be responsible for developing best practices and facilitating knowledge exchange through regional workshops and technical training, ensuring that stakeholders are engaged in addressing transboundary and regional environmental challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Knowledge Management Coordinator will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including leading the implementation of the Adaptation Fund project, ensuring effective delivery of planned activities and outputs. This includes organizing regional workshops on coastal climate adaptation, overseeing the development of a digital knowledge platform for knowledge exchange, and coordinating the preparation of regional knowledge products. The Coordinator will also support the monitoring and reporting of project activities, strengthen partnerships with regional and international institutions, and prepare technical documentation such as project proposals and policy briefs. Engaging stakeholders and decision-makers in policy dialogues and consultations will also be a key responsibility, contributing to the development of regional strategies and action plans that align with the priorities of the Abidjan Convention.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in fields such as knowledge management, environmental sciences, marine affairs, or climate change. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in coastal zone management, marine conservation, or climate adaptation is required, along with demonstrated experience in regional or international cooperation mechanisms. Strong analytical, writing, and reporting skills are desirable, as well as experience in project development and management. Familiarity with coastal communities and regional organizations is considered a strong asset, along with technical knowledge of marine and coastal ecosystems in West, Central, or Southern Africa.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in knowledge management, information systems, environmental sciences, marine affairs, natural resource management, climate change, international development, or a related field. In lieu of an advanced degree, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of marine and coastal resilience and the associated environmental challenges.

Experience:
The position requires at least two years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields such as coastal zone management, marine conservation, or climate adaptation. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in regional or international cooperation mechanisms, showcasing their ability to work collaboratively across different stakeholders. Strong project development, management, monitoring, and reporting experience is also essential, as is experience working with coastal communities and national institutions.

Languages:
Fluency in both oral and written English and French is mandatory for this position, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of any other UN language is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a diverse international environment.

Additional Notes:
The expected duration of the contract for this position is 12 months. The role is associated with the United Nations Environment Programme, which does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process. Candidates should be aware that the United Nations does not request information regarding applicants' bank accounts.
