Job Overview: The Data Engineer position at the World Bank is integral to the Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC), which serves as the central reservoir of insights into pressing development challenges. The DEC is led by the Chief Economist and Senior Vice President, who advises the President and senior managers, and leads a large team of economists focused on policy solutions for developing economies. The Office of the Chief Statistician and Director of the Development Data Group (DECDG) aims to leverage data for development, providing technical expertise and support for various data and statistics priorities. The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in expanding and modernizing development data production, management, and governance, particularly through the Data360 framework, which aims to improve the accessibility and dissemination of the World Bank Group's data assets. This position requires a blend of technical skills and the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure effective data management and governance practices.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Data Engineer will be responsible for developing and implementing robust technical and business processes for the ingestion, production, management, and dissemination of statistical and geospatial data. Key duties include architecting and implementing the Data360 framework for self-service production and publishing of development indicators, designing reusable functions and libraries for automated data pipelines using Python or R, and developing CI/CD processes for managing code repositories and data processes. The role also involves assessing and recommending capabilities related to metadata and data quality, mentoring team members on data engineering practices, collaborating with business data stewards on data projects, and serving as a liaison between business and IT departments to ensure data governance requirements are met. Staying updated with the latest data management methods and best practices is also a critical aspect of this role.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in computer or data science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field. They should have at least five years of relevant professional experience in data engineering, with a proven track record of architecting and leading the development of large-scale end-to-end data solutions. Hands-on experience with production-grade ETL pipelines using technologies such as Databricks and Azure data lake is essential. Familiarity with the WBG Data360 framework and experience within the World Bank Group’s ITS ecosystem are also required. Candidates should have solid experience in data governance and management concepts, particularly in a development data context, and knowledge of Agile Project Management methodologies. Strong communication skills and the ability to document technical solutions for various audiences are crucial.
