Job Overview:
The Driver position at the United Nations Development Coordination Office (UNDCO) in Amman is a critical role that involves providing safe and efficient transportation services for the Regional Director and authorized personnel. The driver is expected to handle the transport of general cargo and ensure timely deliveries of parcels and documents to various offices and institutions, including ministries and embassies. This position requires a high level of professionalism, as the driver will interact with officials and visitors, providing logistical support for protocol-related processes. The role also includes maintaining the assigned vehicles, performing minor repairs, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The driver must demonstrate good judgment and adaptability in various situations, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the office's operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Safely driving vehicles for the transport of the UNDCO Regional Director and authorized personnel, as well as for general cargo.
  • Making deliveries of parcels, documents, and other items between the office and various institutions, including ministries, UN entities, and embassies.
  • Handling minor purchases and collecting urgent items from local suppliers as needed.
  • Collecting goods from customs while adhering to regulations and formalities.
  • Meeting official personnel at the airport and providing necessary assistance.
  • Offering logistical support for protocol-related processes, including transporting and collecting documents and accompanying staff as required.
  • Performing day-to-day maintenance of assigned vehicles, including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and tools, and arranging for repairs when necessary.
  • Logging fuel consumption and maintenance records.
  • Reporting any damage or loss of vehicle tools. 1
  • Ensuring compliance with rules and regulations in case of accidents. 1
  • Applying good judgment in the context of assignments and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A valid National Driver License is required, along with a valid basic life support (BLS) certificate or equivalent, which is desirable. The position requires a strong understanding of driving rules and regulations, as well as knowledge of the area and current road conditions. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to gender equality in the workplace.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is a high school diploma or equivalent. This foundational education is essential for understanding the responsibilities associated with the role and for ensuring compliance with driving regulations and safety protocols.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of continuous driving experience with a safe driving record is required for this position. Candidates should have experience driving a variety of vehicles, including vans and other motorized vehicles. Experience working with the United Nations or other international organizations is considered desirable, as it indicates familiarity with the operational standards and expectations of such environments.

Languages:
For this position, proficiency in English and Arabic is mandatory, as both are working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates must demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in both languages, as outlined by the UN Language Framework. Knowledge of French is an asset but not required.

Additional Notes:
This appointment is on a local basis and is open for an initial period of one year (364 days), with the possibility of extension subject to funding availability. The position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that candidates must be residents of the country or within commuting distance of the office.
