Job Overview: The position of National Project Personnel for Horticulture Value Chain involves supporting the implementation of Rwanda's fruit tree-based restoration program, which aims to establish large-scale, climate-resilient fruit production systems. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the FAO Representative and the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme), collaborating closely with technical officers and stakeholders. The role requires translating the program's objectives into actionable field-level results, including the selection of appropriate fruit species for various agro-ecological zones and promoting best practices in nursery development and orchard management. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the program aligns with national strategies and contributes to the broader goals of climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable development in Rwanda.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the National Project Personnel include:
Supporting the design of the national Fruit Tree-Based Restoration and Value Chain Development Programme.
Contributing to the phased implementation plan for planting up to 20 million grafted fruit trees, including species such as avocado, macadamia, mango, pomegranate, and grapes.
Conducting mapping exercises in Kigali and other provinces to identify priority sites for fruit tree establishment.
Contributing to landscape zoning and planning for optimal integration of fruit trees.
Providing technical guidance on climate-resilient agroforestry systems.
Developing technical packages and guidelines for fruit tree production.
Ensuring alignment with national strategies and environmental safeguards.
Supporting the establishment and certification of high-quality fruit tree nurseries.
Developing quality assurance protocols for grafted planting materials. 1
Strengthening supply chain systems for seedling production and distribution. 1
Facilitating coordination among stakeholders, including government institutions and development partners. 1
Supporting the preparation of concept notes and proposals for potential donors. 1
Performing any other related duties as requested by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: The minimum requirements for this position include:
A master’s degree in Horticulture, Agroforestry, Agriculture, or a related field.
At least 10 years of professional experience in horticulture and agroforestry value chains.
A working knowledge (level C) of the English language.
The candidate must be a national of Rwanda. Additionally, candidates should possess core competencies such as results focus, communication, teamwork, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a master’s degree in Horticulture, Agroforestry, Agriculture, or a related field. It is essential that the educational qualifications are obtained from institutions accredited or recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED). This ensures that the educational background aligns with international standards and is recognized by FAO.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in horticulture and agroforestry value chains. This experience should include working with farmer organizations, cooperatives, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Familiarity with climate finance mechanisms and experience in developing funding proposals is also desirable. Prior experience working with FAO or similar technical assistance projects is considered an asset.
Languages: A working knowledge of the English language at level C is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly if they are relevant to the local context or the stakeholders involved in the project.
