Job Overview:
The Associate Director for SEMED will play a crucial role in originating, executing, monitoring, and exiting private and listed equity and quasi-equity investments in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region. This position is pivotal in ensuring the overall performance of the SEMED equity portfolio. The Associate Director will also be responsible for formulating and implementing EBRD’s equity investment strategy in SEMED, collaborating closely with sector and country teams. The role involves leading multi-disciplinary teams and ensuring that projects are executed in accordance with the Bank’s policies and strategies. The Associate Director will represent the Bank externally, maintaining and expanding relationships with counterparties, companies, advisors, and co-investors, while upholding EBRD’s ethical standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Business Development: Formulate the Bank’s equity investment strategy and business development approach in SEMED. Lead deal generation and screening of proposals, collaborating with country and sector colleagues to identify viable investments that align with the Bank’s criteria.
  • Structuring and Execution: Manage complex transactions and project teams, leading negotiations and execution of transactions. Oversee project due diligence processes and ensure timely completion of transactions to high standards.
  • Portfolio Monitoring and Value Creation: Take responsibility for the SEMED equity portfolio's performance, ensuring attractive financial returns. Manage relationships with investees and co-investors, lead value creation efforts, and ensure timely reporting of critical investment issues.
  • Staff Management: Recruit, train, and mentor junior investment professionals, ensuring quality project work and effective workload distribution. Foster productive relationships within the organization to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree preferred. Professional qualifications such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA are desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strategic thinking, strong investment judgment, and excellent quantitative skills. Stakeholder management, coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills are essential. The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is crucial, along with excellent written and oral communication skills in English. A strong command of French is an advantage.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree is required for this position, with a preference for candidates holding a Master’s degree. Professional qualifications such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA are highly desirable and will enhance a candidate's profile.

Experience:
Candidates should have significant relevant private equity experience, ideally over 10 years, preferably gained in a major private equity firm or the private equity arm of a significant investment, commercial, or development bank. Experience in SEMED is essential, and previous investment experience in Sub-Saharan Africa is advantageous. Practical experience in leading complex equity transactions through the full project life cycle is required.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent written and oral communication skills. A strong command of French is considered an advantage and would be beneficial for the role.
