Job Overview:
The Assistant Technical Officer, Nurse/Midwife will play a crucial role in providing nursing and midwifery care, treatment, and follow-up for patients in accordance with doctors’ prescriptions, established protocols, and universal hygiene standards. The position requires the individual to assist female patients throughout all stages of pregnancy, childbirth, and post-delivery, offering antenatal and postnatal advice and support to women and their families. The role is vital in ensuring the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population, particularly in a challenging humanitarian context where access to healthcare is limited. The officer will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality patient care to a vulnerable population, ensuring that patients receive the necessary support and treatment in a timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Technical Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including: working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality patient care; ensuring proper reception and installation of patients, particularly those with limited autonomy; conducting triage of patients in waiting areas and wards, identifying priority cases, and providing first aid when necessary; promoting and implementing universal hygiene standards; organizing and executing care and treatments based on medical prescriptions; assisting during consultations and medical procedures; participating in health education for patients and their families; conducting patient admissions, surveillance, and follow-up assessments; managing administrative procedures and documentation; collaborating with Community Health Extension Workers and other volunteers; adhering to the relevant Code of Conduct and ethics; participating in outreach and community health programs; engaging in Continuing Professional Development; planning patient care in collaboration with site doctors; providing direct nursing care, including administering IV medications and wound dressings; maintaining reusable equipment; keeping accurate records of patient care; ensuring high-quality nursing and midwifery services at all project sites; working with technical support and M&E teams to collect baseline data; compiling and submitting periodic reports; and ensuring infection prevention and control measures are upheld at all times.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a BSc in Nursing or Midwifery with 1-3 years of relevant post-NYSC experience. A valid practicing license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife is mandatory. Additional qualifications such as a public health certificate or other related field certifications from a recognized institution are advantageous. Familiarity with Nigerian public sector health systems, NGOs, and CBOs is highly desirable, as is previous experience working in a humanitarian crisis setting.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing or Midwifery. Candidates should also have completed their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program and possess a valid practicing license. Additional certifications in public health or related fields from recognized institutions will be considered an asset.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have 1-3 years of relevant experience post-NYSC. Experience in clinical and maternity settings is preferred, particularly in humanitarian contexts where the ability to adapt to challenging conditions is essential. Previous work in a humanitarian crisis is highly desirable, as it equips candidates with the necessary skills to handle the complexities of providing care in such environments.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, along with proficiency in local languages such as Hausa, Kanuri, or Fula, which are commonly spoken in Northeast Nigeria. Strong communication skills in both spoken and written forms are essential for effective interaction with patients and team members.

Additional Notes:
This position is full-time and may require the candidate to be flexible and willing to rotate to any Local Government Area (LGA) within Borno state. The expected hiring salary range for this role is between USD 7,800 and 8,800 annually, which includes gross salary, basic salary, and allowances.
