Job Overview: The position of Online Volunteer for the Ebola Awareness Campaign is designed to support WHO Uganda's communication team in launching a digital awareness initiative aimed at enhancing national preparedness and response to Ebola virus disease (EVD). The campaign is crucial due to Uganda's vulnerability to recurrent Ebola outbreaks, exacerbated by factors such as porous borders and limited health infrastructure. The volunteer will play a key role in developing and disseminating accurate public health messaging, promoting preventive behaviors, and combating misinformation through various digital platforms. The overarching goal is to increase public awareness of Ebola risks and prevention measures, encourage timely health-seeking behavior, and enhance community engagement through effective risk communication.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteer will be responsible for a range of tasks under the supervision of WHO Uganda’s Communications/RCCE team. These include:
Content Development: Creating culturally appropriate digital content such as graphics, short videos, infographics, and social media posts. Translating complex public health information into accessible messages for diverse audiences and adapting content for various platforms including Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok.
Social Media Engagement: Disseminating approved awareness messages across personal and community networks, engaging with audiences by responding to comments and questions, and promoting key campaign hashtags to ensure messaging consistency.
Misinformation Monitoring: Identifying and reporting misinformation and rumors related to Ebola, and supporting the development of corrective messaging aligned with WHO guidelines.
Campaign Support: Participating in online coordination meetings and briefings, providing innovative ideas to improve content reach and engagement, and supporting real-time communication during outbreak updates or alerts.
Data and Feedback: Tracking engagement metrics such as likes, shares, and comments, and providing feedback on community perceptions and trends observed online. Expected outputs include the regular production of high-quality digital content, increased reach and engagement of Ebola awareness messages, documented reports of misinformation trends, and weekly brief updates on activities and engagement metrics.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position should possess strong communication skills, particularly in digital content creation and social media engagement. They should be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate creativity in developing engaging content. Familiarity with public health messaging and the ability to translate technical information into layman's terms is essential. Additionally, the candidate should have a good understanding of various social media platforms and their dynamics, as well as experience in monitoring and addressing misinformation online.
Educational Background: Candidates should ideally have a background in communications, public health, social sciences, or a related field. A degree or coursework in these areas would be beneficial, as it would provide the necessary foundation for understanding health communication and community engagement strategies.
Experience: While prior experience in health communication or marketing" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">digital marketing is preferred, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the fast-paced environment of public health communication, particularly in the context of health emergencies like Ebola outbreaks.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language for communication within the organization and for the campaign. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Uganda would be advantageous, as it would enhance the ability to engage with diverse communities and ensure that messages resonate with various audiences.
Additional Notes: This position is a volunteer role, and while it may not offer financial compensation, it provides valuable experience in public health communication and community engagement. The role is expected to be part-time, allowing flexibility for volunteers to contribute while managing other commitments. The campaign is part of a broader initiative to strengthen national health systems and improve public health outcomes in Uganda.
