The organization was created as part of the UN reform agenda, aiming to consolidate resources and mandates to enhance impact on gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women merges the work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, namely DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW, and UNIFEM, which focused on gender equality and women's empowerment. The organization operates globally, with a strong presence in various regions, including East Africa, where it implements programs like Women Count to support gender data initiatives.

Job Overview:
The Assistant Graphic Design and Data Visualization Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting UN Women’s Women Count program, which focuses on generating and utilizing gender data to inform policies and monitor the implementation of gender equality-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The consultant will be responsible for developing graphic designs and data visualizations that effectively communicate the results and findings of the program. This position requires creativity and technical expertise in graphic design, as the consultant will work on various projects, including long-form publications, social media graphics, and reports. The consultant will collaborate closely with the UN Women ESA-RO Statistics Specialist and the gender statistics team, ensuring that all outputs adhere to brand guidelines and effectively convey the intended messages to diverse audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting the creation of long-form publications, such as Women Count reports and related communication products, under the guidance of the Gender Statistics specialist.

  • Developing visually engaging social media graphics tailored to various regional audiences and platforms.
  • Contributing to a range of graphic design, layout, and data visualization projects, ensuring consistency and clarity across all materials.
  • Building capacity among country office staff and partners in graphic design, layout, and data visualization techniques.
  • Managing multiple assignments and meeting deadlines in a retainer-based, on-demand consultancy structure.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a combination of educational qualifications and professional skills. Candidates must have completed secondary education, with a university degree (Bachelor’s degree) in Graphic Design, Communications, or a related field considered an asset. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Illustrator, is essential. Candidates should also possess excellent interpersonal skills, a flexible attitude, and experience working with the UN or international organizations. Familiarity with gender equality and human rights issues is an asset, as it supports effective visual communication of program content.

Educational Background:

Experience:
The consultant should have a minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience in graphic design if they have completed secondary education, or at least three (3) years of experience with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field. Experience in communication related to human rights, gender equality, and population dynamics is also considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position. Knowledge of any other UN official language will be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's profile for the role.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy is home-based, and the consultant may be required to travel for assignments, with UN Women covering associated travel costs. The position operates on a retainer basis, meaning the consultant will be engaged as tasks arise during the contract period.
