Job Overview: The Individual Consultant (IC) will play a crucial role in addressing the pressing issue of maternal morbidity in Ghana. The consultant will conduct a comprehensive study to estimate the prevalence and incidence of maternal morbidity, which is critical given the alarming statistics indicating significant rates of potentially life-threatening conditions among pregnant women. The consultant will work under the guidance of the Country Representative and the Head of the Reproductive Health Unit, collaborating with the Technical Working Group to ensure the study's design is scientifically sound and globally accepted. The role involves not only conducting the study but also training data collection staff, coordinating with stakeholders, and presenting findings to key audiences. The overarching goal is to provide actionable insights that can inform targeted interventions to reduce maternal morbidity and improve health outcomes for women in Ghana.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for conducting a maternal morbidity burden study, which includes selecting an appropriate study design, training technical staff for data collection, and coordinating the Technical Working Group on various aspects of the study. Key responsibilities include:
Conducting a thorough maternal morbidity burden study to gather data on the prevalence and incidence of maternal morbidity in Ghana.
Providing guidance on the selection and application of a scientifically appropriate study design.
Training and mentoring technical staff involved in data collection to ensure high-quality data is gathered.
Coordinating with the Technical Working Group on critical aspects of the study, including data collection methodologies, analysis, and report generation.
Making presentations to stakeholders to communicate findings and recommendations effectively.
Submitting a comprehensive report detailing the study's findings, methodologies, and recommendations for addressing maternal morbidity in Ghana.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Medical Degree (MB ChB or equivalent) and have postgraduate training in public health, social sciences, obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN), or maternal-fetal medicine, which will be considered an advantage. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to the values of UNFPA and possess the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of integrity, transparency, and accountability in their professional conduct.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this position include a Medical Degree (MB ChB or equivalent) and preferably postgraduate training in relevant fields such as public health, social sciences, obstetrics and gynecology, or maternal-fetal medicine. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct the study effectively and contribute to improving maternal health outcomes in Ghana.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 10 years of experience in maternal health, with a strong understanding of Ghana's healthcare system. Experience in conducting public health-related research, facilitating stakeholder engagements, and managing complex public health programs is essential. The consultant should also have a wide-ranging experience in delivering analytical reports and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking experience.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in any local language is considered an asset. This linguistic capability is crucial for effective communication with stakeholders and for conducting the study in a culturally sensitive manner.
