Job Overview: The Economic Counsellor and Research Department Director serves as the Chief Economist of the IMF, providing intellectual leadership and strategic vision for the Research Department (RES). This role involves planning, managing, and supervising the department's work, which focuses on conducting strategic research and analysis related to the stability of the international monetary and financial system. The Chief Economist is expected to contribute to the development of IMF strategies and policies while collaborating closely with the IMF management team. The Research Department's responsibilities include policy-oriented research that supports the IMF's work in various member countries, preparing the World Economic Outlook Report, contributing to international forums like the G-20 and G-7, and engaging in multilateral surveillance activities. The successful candidate will also play a key role in public outreach and maintaining relationships with the academic community and other research organizations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide intellectual leadership and strategic vision for the Research Department, ensuring alignment with the IMF's overall mission and objectives.
Oversee the planning, management, and supervision of the department's research activities, ensuring high-quality outputs that inform IMF policies and strategies.
Conduct forward-looking strategic research and analysis on macroeconomic, international trade, and finance issues, contributing to the stability of the international monetary and financial system.
Prepare the World Economic Outlook Report and global macroeconomic projections, ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination.
Engage in multilateral surveillance activities, preparing the External Sector Report and supporting crisis prevention efforts.
Collaborate with area departments to provide technical assistance and bilateral surveillance support.
Foster public outreach initiatives, including seminars and conferences, to promote understanding of macroeconomic issues.
Maintain close contacts with the academic community and other research organizations to enhance the IMF's research capabilities.
Lead efforts to integrate AI and other technologies into the Fund's analytical and forecasting framework, enhancing the effectiveness of multilateral surveillance. 1

Required Qualifications:
An advanced degree in economics or a related field is required.
A minimum of 15-20 years of extensive experience in macroeconomics, international trade, and finance is essential.
A strong academic publication record demonstrating thought leadership in relevant fields.
Proven ability to anticipate and respond to shifting analytical and research needs.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with external counterparts.
Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to guide and support institutional transformation and innovation.
