Job Overview:
The Islamic Philanthropy Lead will be responsible for spearheading UNRWA’s Islamic Giving strategy, which includes integrating Zakat and Sadaqah-based fundraising across various streams such as High Value and Individual Giving. This role is crucial in ensuring that UNRWA’s Islamic Giving initiatives are strategically positioned, theologically sound, and effectively governed to maximize both income and impact. The position requires strong strategic leadership, coordination, and growth of Islamic Philanthropy, working closely with various teams including Individual Giving, High Value, Communications, and Field Offices, as well as Public Partnerships. The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Private Sector Partnerships Division and will be supported by multiple teams to ensure effective delivery across a matrixed organizational structure.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Islamic Philanthropy Lead will undertake a variety of duties including:
  • Strategy & Market Growth: Designing and implementing UNRWA’s Islamic Philanthropy strategy, identifying opportunities in high-potential markets, and developing tailored entry strategies based on market insights.
  • Partnerships & Institutional Engagement: Cultivating high-value Islamic partnerships, developing proposals for support, and producing the annual Islamic Giving Report.
  • Campaign Integration & Individual Giving: Co-leading the design and delivery of Islamic campaigns, ensuring culturally resonant messaging, and integrating Islamic Giving KPIs into performance reports.
  • Governance and Coordination: Serving as the focal point for Islamic Giving, developing KPIs for accountability, and liaising with Islamic scholars for compliance.
  • Knowledge & Capacity Building: Developing internal guidance on Islamic Giving best practices and building capacity on engaging faith-based audiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Islamic Philanthropy, fundraising, or partnership development, with at least two continuous years of international experience outside of their home country. Proven experience in cultivating relationships with Islamic financial institutions and a strong understanding of Zakat and Sadaqah mechanisms are essential. Additionally, experience in designing Islamic giving campaigns and coordinating cross-functional teams is required. Familiarity with the humanitarian landscape in key Islamic philanthropy markets and experience with UN agencies are desirable qualifications.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required, typically including a degree in a field related to philanthropy, international relations, or a similar discipline. Advanced degrees may be preferred but are not explicitly stated in the job description.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is expected to last for 12 months with the possibility of extension, subject to need and budget availability. The consultant will work 22 days per month, from Sunday to Thursday, during regular office hours in Amman. The position is equivalent to a P3 level, with a daily rate of $31
