The consultant will be responsible for writing, copyediting, and proofreading a high volume of documents, ensuring that all content meets the high standards required for publication. The role is crucial in maintaining the integrity and clarity of UNFPA's communications, which are vital for promoting reproductive health and rights in the region. The consultant will work closely with the UNFPA Communications Analyst to ensure that all materials are not only accurate but also engaging and accessible to the intended audience.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will perform substantive editing, which includes rewriting text for improved flow, ensuring consistent style and tone, and monitoring the overall structure for logical coherence. They will also engage in copyediting tasks, such as checking grammar, punctuation, and spelling, ensuring adherence to the UN Editorial Manual, and eliminating jargon and unnecessary material. Additionally, the consultant will be responsible for proofreading, ensuring that all written and visual content is consistent and error-free. This includes reviewing text files and page proofs, correcting typographical errors, and ensuring that all changes made during the proof stage are accurately reflected in the final documents. The consultant will also draft new text as needed and provide suggestions on layout and presentation to enhance clarity and impact.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in English Language/Literature, Linguistics, Journalism, Media and Communication, or a related field. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree with at least 9 years of relevant experience is acceptable. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of experience as a writer and/or editor at an international level, with a strong background in editing for United Nations agencies or intergovernmental organizations. Applicants must submit at least 6 samples of relevant previous work along with their application to demonstrate their expertise and suitability for the role.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as English Language/Literature, Linguistics, Journalism, Media and Communication is required. This educational background is essential for understanding the nuances of language and communication, which are critical for the editing tasks involved in this position. A Bachelor's degree may be considered if accompanied by extensive relevant experience, highlighting the importance of practical skills alongside formal education.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in writing and editing at an international level. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree must have at least 9 years of experience to qualify. Experience specifically with United Nations agencies or intergovernmental organizations is highly desirable, as it indicates familiarity with the standards and expectations of UN communications. The ability to provide a portfolio of previous work is also essential, as it showcases the candidate's editing capabilities and style.
Languages: Expert knowledge of English is mandatory, as the consultant will be working primarily with English language documents. This includes a strong command of grammar, syntax, and style, as well as the ability to edit for clarity and impact.
