Job Overview: The Project Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the delivery of project activities and outputs at ESCAP's premises in Bangkok, Thailand. This position is integral to the successful completion of research analysis, report drafting, editing, and the timely preparation of project outputs. The Project Assistant will be involved in two significant projects: 'Accelerating the Transition to Electric Mobility for Public Transport in Asia and the Pacific (Phase II)' and a United Nations Development Account (UNDA) project focused on enhancing transport connectivity and accessibility in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including government counterparts, to implement low-carbon transport systems and promote sustainable urban mobility. The Project Assistant will contribute to the development of tailored support for pilot electric bus systems in target countries and assist in the creation of an inclusive urban transport assessment framework.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks to support the project team throughout the implementation phase. Key duties include: a) Providing required data and policy analyses to inform project decisions; b) Drafting relevant research inputs that contribute to project outputs; c) Editing, formatting, and designing project reports and associated documents as necessary; d) Assisting in the preparation of the 'Review of Developments in Transport in Asia and the Pacific 2026' report, particularly focusing on sections related to low carbon and resilient transport. The Project Assistant will work under the guidance of the project officer and will be expected to contribute to the finalization of project outputs, ensuring they meet the required standards and deadlines.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in transport, civil engineering, urban planning, economics, international relations, or a related discipline. Required qualifications include: (i) Experience on transport-related topics in Asia and the Pacific, preferably with involvement in coordinating multi-stakeholder projects or organizing national-level workshops in collaboration with government counterparts; (ii) Demonstrated ability in drafting and editing materials on transport and/or international development issues, preferably in the Asia-Pacific region; (iii) Familiarity with the Sustainable Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals and indicators. Desirable qualifications include: (i) Experience in the UN secretariat or other UN common system entities; (ii) Experience or familiarity with the UN editorial manual.
Educational Background: A university degree in a relevant field such as transport, civil engineering, urban planning, economics, or international relations is required for this position. This educational background is essential to understand the complexities of transport systems and the socio-economic factors influencing them, particularly in the context of the Asia-Pacific region.
