Job Overview: The Safeguards Inspector (Radioanalyst) position is integral to the analytical operations of the On-Site Laboratory (OSL) located at the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant in Japan. The primary responsibility of this role is to conduct treatments and measurements on nuclear samples to support IAEA safeguards verification activities. This position requires the inspector to perform both destructive analyses (DA) and non-destructive assay (NDA) techniques on samples, ensuring compliance with international standards and protocols. The inspector will also engage in quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) measures, working closely with the QA Manager to maintain the integrity of analytical results. The role demands extensive travel, often exceeding 100 days per year, including weekends and holidays, reflecting the global nature of the IAEA's mission.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Safeguards Inspector (Radioanalyst) will be responsible for conducting radiochemical work on nuclear material samples, which includes sample dissolution, chemical separation, and isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). The inspector will perform sample processing within hot cells using master-slave manipulators and will carry out measurements using various analytical instruments such as neutron coincidence counters, alpha and gamma spectrometers, and thermal ionization mass spectrometers (TIMS). Additionally, the inspector will analyze and evaluate analytical data, generate regular reports, and ensure that all analytical results are obtained under strict authentication measures. The role also involves implementing nuclear material accountancy and QA procedures, performing routine maintenance of analytical equipment, and preparing for and conducting IAEA safeguards inspections at nuclear facilities. The inspector must be medically cleared for work involving exposure to radioactive materials and will participate in a radiation and health monitoring program.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, or a closely related field. A minimum of five years of experience in a relevant analytical field is required, preferably in laboratory operations or analytical method development. Applicants should have sound knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and experience handling uranium, plutonium, and other actinides, along with a strong understanding of related safety procedures. The ability to perform high-quality work in an analytical laboratory, particularly in a nuclear context, is essential, and practical experience with highly radioactive samples using hot cell manipulators is a significant asset.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a Bachelor's Degree from a recognized university in a relevant field such as physics, chemistry, or engineering. Additional Notes: The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $71,335, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance.
