Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is an agency established by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It serves as the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat collaborates with various partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities, aiming to reduce inequality, discrimination, and poverty through positive urbanization.

Job Overview:
The intern will work under the supervision of the Planning Finance Section and the Urban Finance & Economy Coordinator. The position is designed to support the development of technical and normative outputs related to urban finance, local governance, and local economic development. The intern will assist in gathering and analyzing data, preparing reports and technical documents, and developing presentations and dissemination materials. The role also involves supporting capacity-building initiatives and knowledge-sharing events with stakeholders, particularly in the context of urban finance and governance. The intern will gain valuable experience in the workings of the UN and contribute to meaningful projects that impact urban development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the development of technical outputs by gathering data and contributing to reports and technical documents.
  • Assisting in capacity-building efforts on finance, governance, and economic themes, particularly in francophone contexts.
  • Conducting research on urban finance, local governance, and economic development issues.
  • Preparing communication and fundraising materials, including project proposals and presentations.
  • Coordinating and organizing capacity-building initiatives and events with stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the development of guidelines and policies, drafting documents, and producing information materials.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite) and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations. They should also have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Educational Background:
The preferred areas of study for applicants include Public Finance, Local Finance, Economic Development, Local Economic Development, Public Policy, Public Administration, or related fields. Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. Proof of enrollment or graduation will be required at a later stage.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, relevant experience in data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation is desirable. Candidates should describe any relevant experience in fiscal, financial, economic, or local government data analysis. Experience in stakeholder engagement, advocacy, project proposal development, and coordinating workshops or events, especially with local governments or development partners, is also beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship position. Knowledge of French is also necessary, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Familiarity with another UN language is considered desirable.
