Job Overview:
The Upper School Math Academic Lead Teacher (ALT) plays a crucial role in the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy by delivering specialized content instruction in Math to students in grades 6-1
  • This position requires collaboration with fellow teachers and the Dean of Instruction to create engaging and effective Math lessons that align with New York State learning standards. The ALT is responsible for addressing the diverse needs of students, particularly those with varying levels of English language acquisition and formal education experiences. The teacher must design daily lessons that cater to small group instruction, ensuring that all students receive tailored support. Additionally, the ALT is expected to implement trauma-informed instructional strategies and foster a positive classroom environment that promotes social-emotional development. The role also involves participating in instructional planning sessions, submitting detailed lesson plans, and assessing student progress to inform curriculum design.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Upper School Math Academic Lead Teacher include: participating in instructional planning sessions and program meetings; developing culturally responsive and trauma-informed lesson plans for classes of approximately 15-25 multilingual learners; submitting detailed daily lesson plans, slide decks, and worksheets in advance; administering formative and summative assessments to evaluate student understanding; regularly reviewing student progress and maintaining evidence of learning; completing required reports on time; serving as a mentor for peer educators; substituting for colleagues as needed; creating final report cards for students; providing feedback through staff surveys; and complying with all IRC policies and protocols. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Upper School Math Academic Lead Teacher position must possess a Bachelor’s degree in math education or a related field, with a Master’s degree preferred. A New York State teaching certification is also preferred. Applicants should have a minimum of three years of teaching experience in the New York City Department of Education or another accredited school system, particularly with the relevant age group. Demonstrated success in planning and delivering culturally responsive, trauma-informed curricula for diverse English Language Learners (ELLs) is strongly desired. Candidates should have the ability to differentiate instruction for individual and small group settings, experience with project-based learning, and strong relationship-building and classroom management skills. A highly organized, dependable, and collaborative work style is essential, along with fluency in written and spoken English. Proficiency in a second language relevant to the student population is highly desirable.

Educational Background:

Additional Notes:
The Upper School Math Academic Lead Teacher position is based in New York City and requires applicants to be willing to relocate for the duration of the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy. The position is represented by the OPEIU union and is subject to the terms of a collective bargaining agreement. Compensation for this role ranges from $32.00 to $32.90 per hour, with pay rates determined by factors such as labor market conditions, job type, and individual candidate experience. All hiring is contingent upon passing background checks and submitting an annual physical form. If the school is located at a New York City Public School site, additional fingerprinting may be required.
