Job Overview: The Writer Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the 'Inclusive and Sustainable Rio' project, which aims to enhance urban resilience in the State of Rio de Janeiro. This position involves producing institutional and journalistic content for the SDG Observatory, an online platform that serves as a key deliverable of the project. The consultant will work closely with UN-Habitat’s operational and technical teams, ensuring that all content is clear, cohesive, and accessible to diverse audiences. The Writer Consultant will be responsible for researching and writing about sustainable development, urban resilience, and the SDGs, while also maintaining an organized information file system. The expected duration of this consultancy is seven months, during which the consultant will contribute significantly to the project's goals and outputs.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Writer Consultant will have a range of responsibilities, including: 1) Developing, reviewing, and editing institutional and journalistic content for the SDG Observatory platform, ensuring clarity and accessibility. 2) Reviewing and standardizing texts related to the SDGs, ensuring coherence and alignment with editorial standards. 3) Researching and writing content on sustainable development and urban resilience, incorporating relevant sources. 4) Maintaining an organized information file system for produced data. 5) Completing all required training and courses, including the BSAFE security course. The consultant will also be responsible for producing various editorial packages, thematic articles, and web stories that document ongoing initiatives related to climate change and urban development in Rio de Janeiro.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Social Communication, International Relations, Public Relations, or related fields. Alternatively, candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and an additional three years of relevant professional experience will also be considered. A postgraduate degree in a related field is desirable. Candidates should have a minimum of four years of professional experience in journalism, institutional communication, editorial production, or content development, particularly within Brazil. Proven experience in writing, editing, and reviewing texts for digital platforms is essential, along with experience in communication for international organizations or sustainability initiatives being highly desirable.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as Journalism, Communications, or International Relations. A postgraduate degree in Journalism, Communications, or Development Communication is considered an asset. Candidates must demonstrate a strong foundation in communication principles and practices, particularly as they relate to sustainable development and urban issues.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of four years of professional experience in journalism or related fields, with a focus on content development and editorial production. Experience in writing and editing for digital platforms is crucial, as is familiarity with sustainable development topics and public policy. Previous experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or within the UN System is highly desirable, as it indicates an understanding of the operational context and communication needs of such entities.
Languages: Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory for this position, given the local context of the work. Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of Spanish is desirable, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat and the Regional Office. The ability to communicate effectively in these languages will facilitate collaboration and content development for diverse audiences.
Additional Notes: This consultancy is part-time (90%) and is based locally in Brazil. The total remuneration for the consultant is BRL 48,000, distributed across three payments tied to the delivery of specific products. The consultant must be available for travel within Brazil as required by the Head of the Brazil Office, with travel expenses covered by UN-Habitat according to UN travel guidelines. The appointment is open to Brazilian nationals or external candidates with a permanent visa in Brazil. The contract's extension is contingent upon funding availability and performance, and all applications must be submitted in English through the specified platform, ensuring that all required documents are included.
