Job Overview: The Teacher for the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy will be responsible for creating and implementing daily physical education classes tailored for middle and high school students. The role involves incorporating various individual and team sports, such as badminton and soccer, into the curriculum. The teacher will work collaboratively with other staff members to ensure that the program meets its goals of fostering social-emotional development and building a strong community. The position requires participation in mandatory programming, instructional planning sessions, and training, as well as submitting lesson plans in advance. The teacher will also utilize multilingual instructional approaches to support English Language Learners and engage in instructional coaching cycles. Additionally, the teacher may provide early and/or after-care supervision depending on demand and will be expected to review student progress and make necessary instructional adjustments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in mandatory school programming and instructional planning sessions.
Plan and implement a culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum for physical education.
Submit daily lesson plans weekly in advance of instruction.
Utilize multilingual instructional approaches to support English Language Learners.
Collaborate with Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and staff to plan and review student progress.
Lead classroom climate in accordance with Academy philosophy and protocols.
Engage in instructional coaching cycles and participate in weekly meetings.
Provide early and/or after-care supervision to a cohort of students as needed.
Review student progress and make instructional adjustments as necessary. 1
Substitute for colleagues' classes when required. 1
Complete All Staff Survey to provide feedback on NYSA. 1
Comply with all IRC policies and protocols. 1
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Experience with teaching, leading, or coaching group sports programming is required.
Experience with teaching, leading, or coaching soccer and badminton is strongly desired.
A Bachelor’s degree or higher in physical education or a related field is strongly desired.
Experience teaching English Language Learners or multilingual learners is strongly desired.
Ability to work well with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is strongly desired.
Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is strongly desired.
Strong relationship-building and classroom management skills are strongly desired.

Additional Notes: This position is represented by the OPEIU union and is subject to the terms and conditions of a collective bargaining agreement. The compensation for this role is set at a pay range of $27.50 per hour, applicable to US-based candidates. The pay range is determined based on various factors, including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget considerations. Exact offers will be calibrated based on work location, individual candidate experience, and skills relative to the defined job requirements. All hiring is contingent on passing background checks and submission of an annual physical form. If the school is located at a New York City Public School site, additional fingerprinting may be required.
