Job Overview: As a Computing Engineer at CERN, you will play a pivotal role in the IT Department, specifically in the development and management of Indico, an open-source event management platform utilized by millions globally. Your responsibilities will include designing and evolving the software to meet user needs, ensuring stable and secure service delivery, and contributing to the operation of CERN's Media Platform, which supports webcasts, recordings, and videoconferencing. Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and enhance the Indico software, focusing on user interface improvements and functionality based on user feedback.
Support the operation and coordination of the Indico service, ensuring its reliability and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security for the CERN community.
Engage in product management activities, including outreach and collaboration with external users and contributors.
Mentor and supervise junior developers and graduates, fostering their professional growth.
Assist in the ongoing operation and enhancement of the CERN Media Platform, ensuring high service quality and implementing technical improvements.
Participate in 3rd line support for Indico and the Media Platform as part of the service rota, addressing technical issues and user inquiries.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field. Proven experience in web application development is essential, particularly with technologies such as Python, JavaScript, Flask, React.js, and PostgreSQL. Familiarity with mobile application development, DevOps technologies, and open-source development practices is highly desirable. Candidates should also have experience in user support and requirements gathering, along with an understanding of user-centric design principles.
Educational Background: A Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered, ensuring candidates have a strong foundation in software engineering principles and practices.
Experience: Candidates should have proven experience in web application development, ideally with a focus on Python and JavaScript. Experience with mobile application development, DevOps technologies, and collaborative workflows is also important. Initial experience in coordinating or supervising developers is a plus, as is familiarity with multimedia and streaming technologies.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being an advantage. This bilingual capability will enhance communication within the diverse CERN community.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract. The role requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, with hybrid work flexibility. Candidates should be prepared to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is IT-CA-CTE-2026-72-LD.
