The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is an initiative aimed at supporting newly arrived refugee youth in adapting to the New York City public school system. The NYSA operates for six weeks during the summer, providing a comprehensive curriculum that includes academic classes, creative arts, and physical education. Job Overview:
The English Teacher position at the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) involves teaching daily Parent ESOL (PESOL) and Youth ESOL (YESOL) classes. The role requires the teacher to prepare a curriculum tailored to the needs of the students, focusing on academic English and test preparation. The teacher will create engaging lesson plans, slide decks, and activities that cater to a diverse group of multilingual learners. Additionally, the teacher will be responsible for assessing student progress through formative and summative assessments, collaborating with IRC staff and other educators to monitor and support student development throughout the program. The English Teacher will also participate in instructional planning sessions and contribute to the overall success of the NYSA by fostering a positive classroom environment and adhering to the Academy's philosophy and protocols. This role is crucial in helping students build their language skills and confidence as they transition into the public school system.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The English Teacher will have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: participating in mandatory school programming and instructional planning sessions; leading PESOL and YESOL classes with culturally responsive and trauma-informed lesson plans for classes of approximately 15-25 multilingual learners; submitting detailed daily lesson plans, slide decks, and worksheets in advance of instruction; administering formative and summative assessments to inform curriculum and lesson design; collaborating with IRC staff and teaching staff to monitor student progress and communicate with parents; leading classroom climate in accordance with Academy philosophy; substituting for colleagues as needed; engaging in instructional coaching cycles and participating in weekly meetings; overseeing interns; creating final report cards for each student; completing staff surveys to provide feedback on the program; and complying with all IRC policies and protocols. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary to support the program's objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in English Education or a related field, with a preference for those who are candidates for a Master’s degree in a related field and hold TESOL certification. A minimum of 2 years of classroom teaching experience is required, with a strong emphasis on experience teaching English Language Learners and multilingual learners. Familiarity with curriculum creation and experience teaching in New York City public schools are strongly desired. Candidates should also have certification or experience with Responsive Classrooms or Classroom Mindfulness, as well as strong classroom management skills. Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is highly desirable. The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team is essential, along with a highly organized, dependable, responsive, and collaborative work style.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in English Education or a related field. Candidates pursuing a Master’s degree in a related field and holding TESOL certification are preferred. This educational background is essential to ensure that the teacher is equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively teach English to diverse learners and to create an inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of all students.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2 years of classroom teaching experience, particularly in teaching English Language Learners and multilingual learners. Experience with curriculum creation and familiarity with the New York City public school system are strongly desired. Additionally, candidates should have experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations, which is crucial for understanding the unique challenges faced by the students in the program. Strong classroom management skills and the ability to engage students in a culturally responsive manner are also important aspects of the required experience.

Languages:
Proficiency in a second language relevant to the student population is highly desirable. Languages such as Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian are considered beneficial for this position. While English is the primary language of instruction, the ability to communicate in another language can enhance the teacher's effectiveness in supporting multilingual learners and fostering a more inclusive classroom environment.

Additional Notes:
The NYSA takes place in a centrally located school in New York City, and all applicants must be willing to relocate to the New York City area for the duration of the Academy. This position is represented by the OPEIU union and is subject to the terms and conditions of a collective bargaining agreement. The compensation for this role ranges from $31.00 to $32.90 per hour, with the exact offer being determined based on various factors such as labor market conditions, job type, internal equity, and the candidate's experience and skills.
