Job Overview: The AI Fellow position is a unique opportunity to engage in end-to-end AI innovation within the India Country Office (ICO) of the Foundation. The ICO plays a crucial role in advancing the Foundation's mission through strategic partnerships with government entities, stakeholders, and various sectors. The Digital, Health Innovation and Artificial Intelligence (DHAI) cluster focuses on leveraging AI to develop and scale impactful solutions in health, agriculture, and education, particularly for low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). As an AI Fellow, you will work on high-priority projects that utilize AI to address real-world challenges, collaborating with program teams to ensure that solutions are user-centered and grounded in local realities. This role not only involves technical development but also emphasizes ethical AI practices and capacity building among teams and partners.
Duties and Responsibilities: As an AI Fellow, your responsibilities will include identifying and scoping real-world problems in collaboration with program teams, rapidly prototyping AI solutions, and supporting the design and testing of AI/ML models. You will conduct rigorous evaluations of models to ensure their accuracy and fairness while managing datasets with a focus on data integrity and ethical use. Additionally, you will develop high-quality software, mentor program teams in responsible AI practices, and facilitate workshops to enhance the understanding and application of AI tools. You will also be expected to collaborate across teams and communicate technical concepts effectively to diverse stakeholders, ensuring that AI solutions are accessible and impactful.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess a balance of technical skills and alignment with the Foundation's values. Proficiency in ML/AI modeling, software engineering, and data wrangling is essential, along with a demonstrated ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. A collaborative mindset and adaptability in complex environments are crucial, as is a mission-driven ethos focused on applying AI for public good. Candidates should also have hands-on experience building prototypes with LLMs and a willingness to share knowledge with others.
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a relevant field is preferred. Candidates should have a strong foundation in AI technology and applications, with evidence of applied coursework, research, internships, or early professional experience in the field.
Experience: The position is aimed at early-career professionals with demonstrated applied experience relevant to the projects outlined. Candidates should have at least 3 years of work experience or equivalent internships or research experience that aligns with the responsibilities of the AI Fellow role. A strong enthusiasm for using modern AI tools safely and effectively is also required.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the Foundation. Knowledge of additional languages may be beneficial but is not required.
Additional Notes: This is a 12-month limited-term employment position, with five vacancies available. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in India, and visa sponsorship or relocation assistance will not be provided. Remote work arrangements may be considered based on project needs. The role may require travel up to 30% domestically and globally.
