Job Overview:
The Individual Contractor position at ESCAP is designed to support the organization's commitment to enhancing Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems in the Asia-Pacific region. The contractor will work under the direct supervision of the Programme/Project Officer and the general supervision of the Chief of the Population and Social Statistics Section. The primary focus of this role is to assist in the collection and review of research papers related to the 2026 CRVS Research Forum and the CART initiative. The contractor will also be responsible for producing a comprehensive compendium of research papers and providing support for various research-related tasks. This position is critical in ensuring that the agreements made as part of the Regional Action Framework on CRVS are implemented effectively, contributing to the overall goal of improving CRVS systems in the region. The contractor will engage in activities that promote the dissemination of research findings and support the development of a robust research culture among CRVS practitioners.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Individual Contractor include:
  • Assisting with the collection and review of papers produced as part of the 2026 CRVS Research Forum and CART initiative.
  • Producing a compendium of research papers related to the CART and CRVS Research Forum.
  • Supporting the responsible staff member with the CART initiative and other research-related tasks.
  • Providing assistance for activities and presentations that focus on the implementation of agreements made under the Regional Action Framework on CRVS in Asia and the Pacific.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor. This role requires a proactive approach to research and collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of the CRVS initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Bachelor's degree in statistics, demography, sociology, or related fields. Candidates must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in research and data analysis, with a preference for those who have worked within the United Nations system. Strong skills in statistical analysis, particularly in R, as well as research, writing, and communication skills are essential. The ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment is also a key requirement.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as statistics, demography, sociology, or a related discipline. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of civil registration and vital statistics, as well as for conducting research and analysis effectively.

Experience:
The position requires at least 1 year of experience in research and data analysis. Experience working within the United Nations system is preferred, as it provides valuable insights into the organization's operations and objectives. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of statistical analysis and research methodologies.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, including strong writing skills. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English is the primary language of communication within the organization.
