Job Posting Organization: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. Established in 1957, the IAEA is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, and operates in over 180 countries. The agency's mission is to ensure that nuclear energy is used safely and securely, and it plays a crucial role in global nuclear non-proliferation efforts. The IAEA employs a diverse workforce of professionals from various fields, including science, engineering, and policy, to fulfill its mission and support its programs.
Job Overview: The IAEA is offering an internship opportunity within the Safeguards Division of Information Management (SGIM) for individuals passionate about data science. This internship is designed for students or recent graduates who are eager to apply their analytical skills to real-world challenges in an international context. Interns will work closely with experienced data scientists to support the collection and validation of safeguards-relevant information. The role involves engaging with cutting-edge data science solutions, particularly in machine learning, large language models, and generative AI. Interns will have the chance to contribute to the development of innovative analytical capabilities while gaining valuable professional experience in a global organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a data science and analytics intern, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the enhancement of analytical capabilities within the SGIM Innovation Team. Your duties will include building rapid prototypes and proof of concepts to assess usability, continuously improving machine learning models for tasks such as text and image analysis, classification, similarity search, and named entity recognition. You will interact with business users to define project scope and business cases, develop and apply machine learning and deep learning algorithms to enable advanced analytics product functionality, and identify valuable data sources to enhance efficiency in data collection, processing, and analysis.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in data science, computer science with a relevant specialization, or a related field such as applied mathematics, statistics, or computational science. Demonstrated skills in analytic programming using Python are essential, along with experience in machine learning methodologies, including supervised and unsupervised learning and deep learning. A solid understanding of large language models and multimodal model concepts is also required. Familiarity with popular machine learning libraries and frameworks, such as PyTorch, Transformers, and Hugging Face, is highly desirable.
Educational Background: Applicants must be at least 20 years old and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards a first degree. Candidates may apply up to one year after completing their bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. It is important that candidates have not previously participated in the IAEA's internship program.
Experience: The internship is aimed at individuals who are currently studying or have recently graduated, thus requiring candidates to have a foundational level of experience in data science and analytics. While prior professional experience is not mandatory, familiarity with relevant methodologies and tools in data science will be beneficial for candidates to succeed in this role.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is essential for this position. Additionally, proficiency in any other IAEA official language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, or Russian, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.
Additional Notes: The internship is offered for a duration of 12 months, providing a comprehensive opportunity for professional development within the IAEA. Interns will be expected to work full-time and will gain exposure to the organization's operations and the broader context of international nuclear safeguards. Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application to support their candidacy.
