Job Overview: The Computing Engineer position at CERN involves developing, operating, and supporting industrial control system solutions that are integral to CERN's accelerators, technical infrastructure, and experimental facilities. The role focuses on the integration of heterogeneous equipment and promotes standardized approaches to ensure the reliability, scalability, and maintainability of control systems. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery, operation, and continuous improvement of control system integration services, with a strong emphasis on OPC UA-based systems and CAN Open devices. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to enhancing the operational capabilities of CERN's control systems.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include supporting the integration of industrial devices and subsystems into CERN control systems using OPC-UA standards. The engineer will contribute to the operation and support lifecycle, which includes incident analysis, feedback loops, and continuous service enhancement. Responsibilities also encompass supporting the integration and diagnostics of fieldbus-based systems, including CAN and CANopen, where applicable. The engineer will work in a highly heterogeneous environment that involves both commercial and custom-built systems, ensuring reliability and maintainability are prioritized. Additionally, the role includes contributing to the development, maintenance, and operation of validation and testing tools, primarily based on Python. The engineer will design and execute automated validation workflows and test campaigns to ensure compliance, robustness, and performance of integrated systems. Analyzing system behavior and troubleshooting integration and production issues across a diverse set of deployed systems is also a key responsibility. Furthermore, the engineer will provide technical expertise, documentation, and guidance to users on integration solutions and tools.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an initial experience or a strong academic background in industrial control systems, distributed systems, or automation. Exposure to OPC-UA or similar industrial communication protocols, including basic configuration and testing, is essential. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and structured development workflows is also required. Experience working on technical projects, whether academic or professional, that involve system integration or automation is necessary. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in OPC-UA.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Automation, or a related field. Applicants must have graduated within the last two years and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Candidates without a university degree or those holding a PhD are not eligible for this position.
Experience: The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. Candidates should have initial experience in software engineering, automation, or related fields, particularly in roles that involve system integration or automation.
