Job Overview:
The Associate Engineer will play a crucial role in the Engineering and Facility Management Section of UNSOS, primarily based in Mogadishu. This position requires the application of professional engineering knowledge and expertise to support the design, construction, and maintenance of various infrastructure projects. The incumbent will be responsible for planning and designing engineering projects, conducting site investigations, preparing design layouts, and producing cost estimates. The role also involves collaborating with other engineers and mission specialists to ensure technical feasibility and adherence to project objectives. The Associate Engineer will utilize AutoCAD software for architectural and engineering drawings and will be expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and accountability in all tasks. This position is essential for ensuring that the engineering projects align with the mission's goals and contribute to the overall stability and development of Somalia.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Engineer will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Planning and Design: - Apply engineering calculations and practices to complete portions of larger projects related to buildings, roads, bridges, and other structures. - Conduct preliminary site investigations to gather essential data for building site selection. - Prepare design layouts for smaller or less complex projects. - Produce cost data and estimates for engineering-related requirements and participate in budget projections. - Create architectural and engineering drawings using AutoCAD and inspect work sites as necessary. - Convert historical drawings to AutoCAD files for mission-wide reference. - Maintain and control requests for copies of architectural and engineering plans.
  • Implementation: - Develop technical data, drawings, and records for project specifications. - Analyze project proposals for technical feasibility and resource allocation. - Collaborate with other engineers and specialists to address project challenges. - Conduct research to gather information relevant to engineering projects. - Prepare engineering presentations and evaluate technical proposals from vendors. - Recommend improvements to current workflows and processes. - Apply standard engineering practices in construction and maintenance activities.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the mission's objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong foundation in engineering principles, with proficiency in AutoCAD being a mandatory requirement. Knowledge of IPSAS 17 is desirable. The role demands a high level of professionalism, accountability, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Candidates should demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to adapt their communication style to suit different audiences. Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, architecture, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background ensures that candidates have the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform effectively in the role.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in engineering, architecture, or related areas is required. This experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability to manage engineering projects, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and apply engineering principles in real-world scenarios. Candidates should have a proven track record of delivering results in challenging environments, particularly in the context of infrastructure development and maintenance.

Languages:
English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of French is considered an asset, as it may enhance communication within the United Nations Secretariat and with international partners. Proficiency in additional languages may also be beneficial in the context of working in a multicultural environment.

This position is temporarily available for a limited duration and is subject to local recruitment, meaning it is open only to Somali Nationals. The selected candidate will not be eligible for allowances or benefits exclusive to international recruitment.
