Job Overview: The intern will support UN Women’s efforts in gender-sensitive transitional justice, rule of law, and protection under the supervision of the Policy Specialist, Rule of Law and Transitional Justice. The role involves engaging in policy development, knowledge sharing, and supporting the implementation of global programming related to transitional justice and rule of law. The intern will also participate in interagency groups and contribute to UN Women’s participation in various coordination mechanisms, enhancing their understanding of gender-responsive practices in these areas. The position is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience about UN Women’s normative and programming roles, while also developing the intern's research, writing, and communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support policy development and knowledge sharing on justice and protection by assisting with ongoing research projects and preparing inputs for annual reports on women, peace, and security.
Aid in the implementation of UN Women’s global programming on transitional justice and rule of law, including participation in meetings with country offices and program partners, and preparing narrative reports for donors.
Engage in interagency fora and coordination mechanisms related to justice and protection, providing feedback on documentation, preparing inputs, and liaising with country offices for specific meetings and missions.
Develop a strong understanding of good practices in gender-responsive transitional justice and rule of law, and emerging global issues in these fields.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have university studies in law, international affairs, gender studies, or other relevant fields. They should be enrolled in a graduate program, in their final year of a bachelor's program, or have graduated within the last two years. Alternatively, candidates may be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program that requires the internship as part of their studies. Excellent communication skills in English are mandatory, and knowledge of another UN language is advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this internship include being enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), being in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level), having graduated with a university degree within the last two years, or being enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program that includes the internship as part of its requirements.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have relevant academic experience, but specific professional experience is not mandatory. However, familiarity with transitional justice, rule of law, and issues related to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is beneficial. The intern should demonstrate an ability to perform qualitative and quantitative policy research and engage effectively with partners.
Languages: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. A working knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, enhancing the intern's ability to engage in diverse international contexts and with various stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The internship is designed to provide a stipend to interns who are not receiving financial support from other sources. Interns are required to submit a completed P.11 form with their application and provide proof of enrollment in a valid health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment or degree, a scanned copy of their passport/national ID, and a copy of a valid visa if applicable.
