Job Overview: The Humanitarian Mine Action Team Member (Deminer) position is crucial for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of demining operations in high-risk areas. The role involves adhering to strict guidelines and procedures as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) established by DRC. The successful candidate will undergo comprehensive training to ensure they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform demining tasks safely and effectively. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, discipline, and teamwork, as the Deminer will be responsible not only for their own safety but also for the safety of their colleagues in potentially hazardous environments. The role is physically demanding and requires a willingness to work in challenging conditions, often away from home for extended periods. The Deminer will play a vital role in conducting safe demining procedures, maintaining equipment, and assisting with surveys, all while following the guidance of the Team Leader and ensuring compliance with established safety protocols.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Deminer will be responsible for completing all mandatory training as determined by the Mine Action Program Coordinator. Key duties include conducting safe demining procedures in strict accordance with the SOPs, maintaining personal protective equipment in good condition, and ensuring that all demining tools and equipment are clean and functional. The Deminer must adhere to the proper marking systems as specified in the SOPs and maintain discipline while on the work site. Responsibilities also include assisting with both non-technical and technical surveys of areas, reporting any safety threats to the Team Leader, and being prepared to provide first aid in emergencies. The Deminer is expected to work collaboratively with team members to ensure the effectiveness of operations and to follow all instructions from the Team Leader diligently.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess physical and psychological endurance, demonstrating a willingness to engage in physically demanding manual labor. A strong sense of discipline and the ability to follow direct instructions are essential. Candidates should not have issues with alcohol or drug use. A driving license and experience in driving are desirable, as are certificates from DRC or other NGOs in Battle Area Clearance/Manual Demining in Mine Action (BAC). Previous experience working as a team member in similar roles is also advantageous. Knowledge of the English language is considered a plus, enhancing communication within the team and with external stakeholders.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is Secondary Education, complemented by Vocational Education or Professional training in a relevant organization. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the foundational knowledge necessary for the technical aspects of demining work.
Experience: Candidates are expected to have relevant experience in physically demanding roles, particularly in high-risk environments. Previous work experience as a team member in humanitarian or demining contexts is highly valued, as it demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively and effectively under pressure.
