Job Overview:
The Computing Engineer position at CERN involves operating the CMS Global Pool of computing resources. The role requires monitoring, maintaining, and evolving the submission infrastructure of the experiment. The successful candidate will be responsible for adjusting the pool parameters to meet the computing priorities and needs of the experiments, upgrading, configuring, and troubleshooting components of the Global Pool, and communicating any provisioning or scheduling issues. This position is crucial for ensuring the efficient operation of the computing resources that support CERN's scientific research.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor the HTCondor batch system used to realize the Global Pool of computing resources.
  • Adjust pool parameters to align with the computing priorities and needs of various experiments.
  • Upgrade, configure, and troubleshoot components of the Global Pool to ensure optimal performance.
  • Communicate any provisioning or scheduling issues to relevant stakeholders and report the Global Pool status during coordination meetings.
  • Collaborate with team members to enhance the submission infrastructure and contribute to the overall success of the experiments.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess knowledge in Linux service administration and management, as well as proficiency in Python and shell scripting. Experience with distributed computing or high-performance computing is advantageous. Familiarity with batch systems and high throughput computing on Grid/Cloud environments is also a plus. Additionally, experience with configuration management software such as Puppet and software development or code design is beneficial.

Educational Background:
Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Those without a university degree are not eligible, and applicants with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. By the application deadline, candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience in a relevant field since graduation. This experience should ideally be in areas related to computing, software engineering, or IT, and should demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a technical environment.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
