Job Overview: The position of Applied Physicist at CERN involves leading the organization's participation in the ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle Physics ESFRIs) Collaboration. The successful candidate will be responsible for steering and shaping activities that align with the needs of High Energy Physics and multi-science initiatives. This role requires representing CERN in the ESCAPE Collaboration board, where the individual will strengthen CERN's leadership in governance and drive the convergence of a common vision for Open Science. The physicist will engage with other European science clusters to foster alignment of infrastructure projects for research activities and open science, and coordinate CERN's participation in upcoming major EC funding rounds aimed at Scientific Clusters, with the ambition for CERN to lead some proposals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Applied Physicist will have a range of responsibilities including leading CERN's participation in the ESCAPE Collaboration, representing CERN in governance discussions, and driving the science cluster towards a unified vision for Open Science. The role also involves engaging with various European science clusters to align infrastructure projects, coordinating CERN's participation in EC funding rounds, and managing relationships with multiple project partners. The physicist will be expected to promote innovative thinking, create strategic partnerships, optimize resources, and communicate effectively across the organization. Additionally, the position may require working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related field. Significant experience in leading and coordinating large-scale scientific collaborations is essential, along with proven experience in managing Research and Innovation projects funded by the European Commission. Demonstrated experience in international scientific collaborations and managing complex research activities is required. Desired qualifications include experience in collaborating across scientific communities in computing, negotiating with industry, and holding post-doctoral or equivalent certifications recognizing excellence in research leadership.
Educational Background: A PhD or equivalent in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field is required for this position. This educational background ensures that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to contribute effectively to CERN's research initiatives.
Experience: The position requires significant experience in leading large-scale scientific collaborations and managing research projects funded by the European Commission. Candidates should have a proven track record of coordinating contributions from various institutes and industries, as well as experience in international scientific collaborations. The ideal candidate will also have experience in project proposal writing for large-scale, multi-institute, and multi-science projects.
Languages: Fluency in both spoken and written English and French is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication within the organization and with external partners.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 3 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The job involves a 40-hour work week with hybrid working flexibility. The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary that is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances.
