Job Overview: The Project Assistant- Laboratory (WASH) position is crucial for managing laboratory operations related to water quality testing and wastewater analysis in the context of humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar. The role involves conducting routine biological, chemical, and physical tests on water samples from various sources, including tube wells and household samples, to ensure the safety and quality of water supplied to the refugee population. The Project Assistant will also be responsible for monitoring wastewater effluent quality, participating in the development of work plans with implementing partners, and ensuring compliance with quality control and assurance protocols. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to communicate effectively with both IOM staff and implementing partners to address challenges and improve laboratory practices. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that laboratory operations are efficient, accurate, and aligned with the organization's standards and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct routine and simple biological, chemical, and physical tests on water samples from selected tube wells, boreholes, and households, maintaining accurate records of all tests performed.
Perform tests on wastewater samples from DEWATS to monitor pathogen reduction and effluent quality, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
Collaborate with implementing partners to develop a clear work plan and share weekly water and effluent quality monitoring reports, including test results and recommendations.
Adhere to quality control and quality assurance protocols, providing suggestions for improvements in operating procedures.
Facilitate refresher training sessions for implementing partners on sample collection and corrective measures.
Maintain effective communication with implementing partners and IOM colleagues, identifying challenges and reporting them to the direct supervisor.
Support coordination with lab consultants to promote good laboratory practices and ensure timely sample collection and analysis.
Analyze and interpret faecal sludge effluent test results, addressing any inconsistencies.
Demonstrate critical analysis skills and take initiative to suggest improvements in testing quality, particularly regarding faecal sludge parameters. 1
Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and compliance with quality assurance protocols. 1
Ensure sufficient stock of reagents and resources for laboratory operations, submitting procurement requests in advance. 1
Maintain close contact with WASH camp focal persons to address beneficiary complaints promptly. 1
Manage laboratory resources and equipment responsibly, ensuring proper accountability. 1
Ensure proper storage and disposal of water and effluent quality monitoring materials and reagents. 1
Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor and head of the unit.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry, along with three years of relevant working experience. Alternatively, a High School Diploma with five years of practical experience in a related field is acceptable. A sound knowledge of laboratory equipment, water and wastewater quality sampling techniques, and laboratory analysis is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate strong analytical skills, the ability to conduct quality assurance and quality control checks, and familiarity with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this position include a university degree in a relevant scientific field such as Biotechnology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry. Candidates with a High School Diploma will be considered if they have substantial practical experience in laboratory settings. A strong foundation in laboratory techniques and equipment operation is crucial for success in this role.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have experience working with international humanitarian organizations or non-governmental organizations in a multicultural environment. Experience in laboratory operations, particularly in water and wastewater testing, is highly desirable. The candidate should be able to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and demonstrate strong coordination and reporting skills. Teamwork and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision are also important.
Languages: Fluency in English and Bangla is required for this position, both oral and written. Knowledge of the Chittagonian language is considered an added advantage, as it may facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders.
