Job Overview:
The Risk and Compliance Specialist will play a crucial role in ensuring that the Danish Refugee Council's operations in Nigeria adhere to local laws, donor requirements, and internal procedures. This position involves contributing to the development of country strategies and translating them into actionable plans. The specialist will provide technical guidance and support to country operations, fostering a culture of compliance and risk management among staff and managers. The role requires regular risk assessments, the development of training programs, and the implementation of capacity-building initiatives to enhance the organization's risk management capabilities. The specialist will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with humanitarian standards and legal requirements, thereby safeguarding the integrity and effectiveness of DRC's operations in Nigeria.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Risk and Compliance Specialist will be tasked with strengthening and implementing the Risk and Compliance strategy and action plan. This includes developing and delivering training courses for all staff, ensuring compliance within HR, Finance, and Supply Chain procedures, and providing technical support to country and area office staff. The specialist will conduct regular risk assessments, develop action plans based on risk mitigation strategies, and organize training sessions on risk management for DRC and its partners. Additionally, the specialist will lead compliance reviews and audits, assist in non-compliance investigations, and ensure that DRC operations align with local legislation. The role also involves coordinating the submission of mandatory reports to government authorities and maintaining accurate records of compliance initiatives. The specialist will work closely with senior management to identify gaps in compliance and provide recommendations for improvement.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess at least three years of experience managing risks and compliance issues, preferably within a large or local organization. Demonstrated experience in influencing senior-level management and stakeholders in complex contexts is essential. Prior experience in finance, grants, legal advisory, or government liaison roles is preferred. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of developing and delivering successful training sessions and facilitating meetings. Integrity, professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are critical attributes for this role. Full professional proficiency in English is mandatory, and excellent communication skills are required to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is essential for this position, with a preference for degrees in fields related to risk management, compliance, law, or humanitarian studies. Candidates should have a solid understanding of the regulatory environment in Nigeria and the humanitarian sector, as well as the ability to navigate complex legal frameworks.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience in risk management and compliance, ideally within the context of international NGOs or similar organizations. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of compliance frameworks and risk assessment processes, as well as experience in conducting audits and compliance reviews.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as all communication and documentation will be conducted in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Nigeria may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
The position is a national contract based in Abuja, Nigeria, with an employment period starting in May or June 2026 for one year, renewable based on performance and funding. The role is classified under Employment Band G, which is a non-managerial level.
