Job Posting Organization: The UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people. Established in response to the civil war in Tajikistan and the war in northern Afghanistan in the early 1990s, UNHCR operates in over 130 countries worldwide, employing thousands of staff members. The organization focuses on ensuring the rights of asylum seekers, refugees, and stateless individuals are recognized and upheld. The Multi-Country Office (MCO) for Central Asia is based in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and oversees operations in the region, including national offices in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, as well as remote programs in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. UNHCR's mission includes strengthening asylum systems, integrating refugees into host communities, and eradicating statelessness through advocacy and collaboration with local governments and partners.
Job Overview: The UN Volunteer position is designed for undergraduate students seeking hands-on experience in humanitarian work. The volunteer will closely collaborate with various units within the UNHCR MCO in Almaty, supporting the team in preparing a variety of materials such as briefing notes, factsheets, information brochures, and newsletters. The role also involves assisting in organizing events, collecting information, and supporting basic data analysis. Under the supervision of the manager, the volunteer will help organize visits from UNHCR senior management, foreign delegations, donors, and media, contributing to the drafting of briefings and reports for external partners. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into communications and advocacy work within a UN operational environment, while also participating in team meetings and discussions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Volunteer will undertake several key tasks, including: learning about UN processes, protection standards, advocacy, and external relations; supporting the drafting and release of various external and internal materials; assisting in the organization of visibility events and liaising with colleagues and partners; contributing to the planning and organization of events, workshops, and missions; supporting day-to-day activities such as note-taking and maintaining relevant resources or databases; assisting in the compilation of thematic reports and situation reports; and performing other related duties as required. This role is designed to provide practical experience and exposure to the workings of a UN agency.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and demonstrate a commitment to accountability, adaptability, and client orientation. The ideal candidate will exhibit motivation and a commitment to continuous learning, creativity, ethics, and integrity. Additionally, the ability to work effectively in teams and plan and organize tasks efficiently is essential. Familiarity with UN processes and humanitarian principles is advantageous, but not mandatory.
Educational Background: The position is targeted at undergraduate students, ideally those pursuing degrees in fields related to international relations, humanitarian studies, communications, or social sciences. A strong academic background will be beneficial in fulfilling the responsibilities of the role.
Experience: While prior experience in a UN or humanitarian context is not required, any relevant volunteer or internship experience in communications, advocacy, or related fields will be considered an asset. The focus is on providing students with practical experience rather than requiring extensive professional experience.
Languages: The primary working languages in Almaty are Russian and Kazakh; however, proficiency in English is highly desirable, especially within international organizations. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly for engaging with diverse communities and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This is a six-month volunteer assignment, providing an opportunity for practical skills development and insight into humanitarian work. The position is based in Almaty, Kazakhstan, which is classified as a non-hardship duty station with generally good living conditions for international personnel. The city offers reliable utilities, a range of housing options, and accessible healthcare services. Public transportation is functional and affordable, making commuting manageable. No special vaccinations are required for travel to Almaty, and emergency services are readily available.
