Job Overview:
The Project Coordinator will oversee the implementation of the 'Improving Community Disaster Reduction Response in Informal Settlements in Homs and Aleppo' project. This role involves coordinating activities aimed at enhancing community resilience in the face of disasters, particularly in the informal neighborhoods of As-Sabil, Deir Ba’albeh North, Deir Ba’albeh South in Homs, and As-Sukkari in Aleppo. The coordinator will facilitate participatory Hazard Vulnerability Risk Analysis (HVRA) and develop Disaster Reduction Management Plans tailored to the needs of the communities. The position requires a strong focus on community engagement, ensuring that interventions are informed by local needs and risks, and that community members are empowered to take an active role in disaster preparedness and response.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the implementation of project activities in Homs and Aleppo, ensuring alignment with project objectives and timelines.
  • Facilitate participatory Hazard Vulnerability Risk Analysis (HVRA) within targeted neighborhoods, leading to the development of tailored Disaster Reduction Management Plans.
  • Organize and conduct training sessions on disaster preparedness, first aid, psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support, and evacuation procedures for community members.
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders to identify and select community members as master trainers for disaster risk reduction initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate project progress, documenting lessons learned and best practices for future interventions.
  • Raise awareness among community members about disaster risks and preparedness strategies.
  • Support the reintegration of returning residents, focusing on vulnerable groups such as women, youth, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Prepare regular reports on project activities and outcomes for UN-Habitat and other stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in project management, particularly in disaster risk reduction or community development.
  • Strong understanding of the socio-economic context of Homs and Aleppo, particularly in relation to informal settlements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse community members and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in project monitoring and evaluation methodologies.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in social sciences, urban planning, disaster management, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in project management, community development, or disaster risk reduction is required. Experience working in conflict-affected areas or with vulnerable populations is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic is mandatory. Proficiency in English is highly desirable, and knowledge of additional languages spoken in the region would be an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is full-time and based in Homs and Aleppo, Syria. The project duration is expected to last for several years, with ongoing funding contingent on project performance and donor support. The role may involve travel within the region to engage with communities and stakeholders. Compensation and benefits will be commensurate with experience and in line with UN-Habitat policies.
