Job Overview: The Project Graduate position in the Education section of CERN's Education, Communications and Outreach (ECO) group is designed for individuals passionate about engaging young learners and families in hands-on science. The role involves developing and piloting accessible weekend education lab formats aimed at sparking curiosity in science among visitors aged 5 and above. The Education section runs a broad portfolio of programs for teachers and school students, and conducts Physics Education Research to support evidence-informed design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design and evaluation. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing existing educational offerings, conducting gap analyses, and designing new workshops tailored for families and individual visitors. This position is integral to enhancing CERN's educational activities, particularly during weekends, school holidays, and special events, and aims to create a more inclusive and engaging learning environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Project Graduate include: conducting a detailed review of existing education offerings such as workshops and science shows to identify gaps; deepening knowledge in STEM education experiments and exploring diverse delivery methods; designing new workshops specifically for families and individual visitors, which includes developing accessible formats, piloting sessions, delivering them, and evaluating their outcomes; creating portable rental education sets for local outreach events; developing and evaluating training materials for guides to support new workshop formats; and contributing to various activities within the Education section and across the ECO group. The role requires strong organizational and project coordination skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team within a large international organization.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and possess a professional background in Science Education, STEM, or a related field. They should have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Science Education, STEM, or a related field. The educational qualifications should reflect a strong foundation in scientific principles and educational methodologies, particularly those relevant to engaging young learners and families in science.
Experience: The position requires experience in science education, particularly working with children aged 5-1
Candidates should have experience in developing and facilitating inquiry-based learning activities and should be adept at communicating scientific concepts clearly and engagingly to diverse audiences. Experience with particle physics education is considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. Proficiency in both languages will enhance communication and engagement with a broader audience.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. The target start date is June 1, 202
