UNDP's mission in Indonesia emphasizes mutual respect, support, and accountability, ensuring that all programs are implemented by national entities to strengthen local capacities and foster sustainable development.
Job Overview: The Laboratory Assistant position is a volunteer role within the Health Governance Initiative (HEART) Programme, specifically supporting the Biomedical and Genome Science Initiative (BGSI) at the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Indonesia. This role offers an apprentice opportunity for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in laboratory procedures related to genomic sequencing and biomedical research. The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for performing essential laboratory tasks such as DNA extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and sequencing preparation. The position requires collaboration with various teams to ensure the quality and integrity of laboratory processes and data management. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Laboratory Technician and will contribute to the overall objectives of improving health system capacity and addressing health development gaps in Indonesia.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Laboratory Assistant will undertake a variety of tasks including:
Performing DNA extraction from clinical and culture samples to prepare for further analysis.
Conducting Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify DNA samples for sequencing.
Carrying out library preparation and sequencing runs, ensuring that all procedures adhere to established protocols.
Performing initial data quality control to verify the accuracy and reliability of sequencing results.
Recording, organizing, and reporting laboratory work processes and results/data in a systematic manner.
Ensuring sample traceability and integrity throughout the laboratory workflow to maintain high standards of quality.
Compiling and integrating laboratory data into project databases for analysis and reporting purposes.
Maintaining laboratory instruments and consumables stock according to project needs to ensure smooth operations.
Collaborating with Data Analysts and Clinical Teams to ensure complete sample-to-data traceability and support clinical and surveillance objectives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Laboratory Assistant position should possess a strong commitment to the principles of accountability, adaptability, and teamwork. They should demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to plan and organize their work efficiently. A proactive approach to self-management and a willingness to learn and grow within a laboratory environment are essential. Additionally, candidates should be able to work collaboratively with diverse teams and contribute to an inclusive and respectful workplace.
Educational Background: A background in biological sciences, biotechnology, or a related field is preferred for the Laboratory Assistant position. Candidates should have completed relevant coursework or training that provides foundational knowledge in laboratory techniques and procedures. A degree or diploma in a related discipline will be advantageous, but candidates with practical experience or relevant certifications may also be considered.
Experience: While prior laboratory experience is not mandatory, any hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, particularly in molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction and PCR, will be beneficial. Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to new laboratory protocols and procedures. Experience working in a team-oriented environment and collaborating on scientific projects will also be advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UNDP and the primary language for documentation and communication. Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local teams and stakeholders. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly if they relate to the local context or the communities served by the health initiatives.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position under the UNV (United Nations Volunteers) program, and it is expected to be full-time. The role is based in Jakarta, Indonesia, where the cost of living is moderate, and basic living needs are readily available. The position may involve working in a typical laboratory/hospital environment, and candidates should be prepared for the standard working conditions associated with such settings.
