Job Posting Organization:
The position is located within the Appeals Section (AS) of the Administrative Law Division (ALD) at the Office of Human Resources (OHR), which is part of the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC) of the United Nations. The ALD is responsible for implementing the UN standards of conduct for all personnel across the UN Secretariat. It provides strategic and legal advice on internal justice matters and represents the Secretary-General before the United Nations Dispute Tribunal. The division also handles disciplinary matters related to Secretariat staff members and works to empower UN managers in addressing conduct and discipline issues. Job Overview:
The Legal Assistant plays a crucial role in managing the administrative details related to the Appeals Section's caseload before the United Nations Dispute Tribunal (UNDT). This includes developing and maintaining a comprehensive database for cases, conducting basic legal research, and assisting in the maintenance of legal reference files. The incumbent will draft, edit, and finalize various legal documents and correspondence, manage administrative matters related to submissions, and handle inquiries from internal and external parties. The position requires a proactive approach to maintaining internal databases for tracking cases and generating reports, as well as providing general office support services. The Legal Assistant must demonstrate professionalism, effective communication, and strong organizational skills to succeed in this role.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Legal Assistant is responsible for a variety of tasks, including: managing administrative details related to the UNDT caseload; conducting legal research using various sources; maintaining legal reference files; drafting and editing legal documents and correspondence; managing submissions and obtaining evidence; handling inquiries from internal and external parties; maintaining internal databases for case tracking; generating reports; providing general office support services; and performing other ad hoc duties as assigned. The role requires attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and effective communication skills to interact with high-ranking officials and handle confidential matters.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, seven years of experience in paralegal work, conference servicing, general office support, or a related area is required. Experience supporting Legal Officers, Lawyers, or Judges at the United Nations or similar international organizations is desirable. Familiarity with UN staff regulations, rules, policies, and procedures is also preferred. The position demands a strong understanding of legal processes and the ability to conduct thorough research using diverse sources.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school diploma or equivalent. There are no specific job-specific qualifications listed, but a background in legal studies or related fields may be beneficial.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least seven years of relevant experience in paralegal work, conference servicing, or general office support. Experience in a legal environment, particularly within the United Nations or similar international organizations, is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN regulations and procedures will be an advantage.

Languages:
English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is considered a desirable language, also requiring a minimum proficiency of UN Level II in all language skills. Proficiency in additional languages may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
This position is temporarily available until December 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension subject to budgetary approval. It is subject to local recruitment, meaning applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Selected candidates from outside the duty station will be responsible for their relocation expenses.
