Job Overview: The position of Programme Coordinator for the Tsunami Resilience Section involves leading and coordinating activities related to tsunami warning and mitigation systems in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean. The incumbent will be responsible for managing the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Tsunami Warning and Mitigation Systems, ensuring effective policy development, planning, and implementation of work plans. This role requires collaboration with various IOC programmes and sections, as well as external partners, to enhance tsunami resilience and preparedness. The coordinator will also oversee extra budgetary contributions and capacity-building projects, ensuring that resources are managed transparently and effectively. Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will lead the IOC Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Tsunami Warning and Mitigation Systems, coordinating activities and ensuring follow-up on policy development and implementation. Responsibilities include managing extra budgetary contributions, providing scientific and technical support, and ensuring effective communication with stakeholders. The coordinator will monitor the implementation of work plans, prepare strategic documents, and liaise with regional bodies on tsunami warning matters. Additionally, the role involves planning and supporting capacity development initiatives, coordinating training activities, and generating planning instruments based on results-based management concepts. Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in earth/ocean sciences, disaster management, or a related field. A PhD in Ocean Sciences or disaster management is desirable. The position requires at least 7 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in managing and coordinating ocean-related programmes and projects. Familiarity with ocean observing techniques, tsunami generation, and international arrangements for tsunami early warning systems is essential. Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills are required, along with effective communication abilities to convey complex issues to diverse audiences.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as earth/ocean sciences or disaster management is required. A PhD in a related discipline is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's competitiveness for the position.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience in leading and managing programmes related to ocean sciences or disaster management. Experience within the United Nations system or similar international organizations is highly valued. Familiarity with fundraising and resource mobilization, as well as outreach activities and partnership building, is also beneficial.
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's qualifications.
