Job Overview:
The position of Head of Digital and Frontier Technologies at the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) is a pivotal role that involves leading research, engagement, and policy advisory activities in the rapidly evolving fields of digital and frontier technologies. This role is crucial as it contributes to shaping policy debates that are currently at the forefront of the global agenda, including topics such as AI governance, data governance, digital inclusion, human rights in the digital age, and the future of digital economies. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence how these technologies can be responsibly leveraged to enhance human and planetary well-being, accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, and inform governance priorities for the post-2030 era. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Head of Digital and Frontier Technologies will be responsible for a range of key activities that are essential for advancing UNU-CPR’s mission. These include designing and leading impactful work programmes that provide thought leadership in areas critical to multilateral negotiations and policymaking. The role involves identifying and engaging target policy audiences, investing in joint research initiatives, and securing sustainable funding for the research pillar. The successful candidate will also direct, produce, and strategically disseminate targeted research, analysis, and commentary for UNU-CPR stakeholders, enhancing the Centre’s visibility and impact. Additionally, the Head will support management at UNU-CPR, ensuring effective administration of the pillar and its projects, and contribute to quality assurance processes. The position requires regular delivery of high-quality knowledge products, attracting significant third-party funding, and broadening the community of UNU-CPR partners and collaborators.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a PhD in a relevant academic discipline, although an advanced degree combined with a strong publication record and professional experience in fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, digital governance, economics, law, political science, international relations, or public policy may also be considered. A minimum of 15 years of relevant policy research experience or a combination of professional and research experience is required. Exceptional drafting ability and experience in producing academic reports and communications, as well as demonstrated success in fundraising and managing donor relations, are essential. Candidates should have excellent analytical and presentation skills, familiarity with the United Nations, and the ability to work in a multicultural environment with sensitivity to diversity and gender parity.

Educational Background:
A PhD in a relevant academic discipline is strongly preferred for this position. However, candidates with an advanced degree and a strong publication record, along with significant professional experience in relevant fields, may also be considered. The educational background should ideally align with the core thematic areas of digital and frontier technologies, governance, and policy analysis.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 15 years of relevant policy research experience or a combination of professional and research experience. Candidates should have a proven track record in drafting and editing academic reports, as well as experience in translating complex research for policy communities. Familiarity with the dynamics of UN Member States and intergovernmental processes is advantageous, and candidates with strong private-sector experience in technology development or digital innovation are encouraged to apply, even without prior UN experience.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position. Knowledge of another UN official working language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the multilingual environment of the United Nations.

Additional Notes:
This is a full-time position based in New York, requiring a minimum number of days in the office. The successful candidate will be employed under a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract, with an attractive compensation package that includes an annual salary ranging from USD 150,000 to USD 169,795, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits include 30 days of annual leave, health insurance, access to a discretionary travel fund, and professional development funds.
