Job Overview: The Arabic-French speaking Cultural Mediator will be an integral part of a roving team that includes a Protection and GBV Expert and other cultural mediators. This role is crucial in assisting newly arrived individuals in Lampedusa, particularly at disembarkation points and hotspots. The Cultural Mediator will not only provide cultural mediation services but will also conduct information sessions and offer direct support with a high degree of autonomy. The position requires the candidate to work closely with the Protection and GBV expert to identify Persons with Specific Needs (PSN), focusing on survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and facilitate their referral to IRC/UNHCR teams in other areas for follow-up support. Additionally, the Cultural Mediator will assist in data collection and contribute to protection monitoring and assessment activities, ensuring that the needs of vulnerable populations are met effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Cultural Mediator will have a variety of responsibilities, including conducting outreach activities in key disembarkation areas and the Lampedusa hotspot to identify beneficiaries' needs, particularly focusing on GBV survivors. They will provide Arabic and French cultural mediation during information sessions, both in group settings and one-on-one meetings, especially for GBV survivors. The role involves conducting group activities in a Safe Space to foster trust between GBV specialized staff and clients, offering in-depth information about GBV services, and facilitating workshops to alleviate discomfort related to their stay in the hotspot. The Cultural Mediator will ensure a protection presence in Lampedusa disembarkation areas and hotspots, delivering accurate information on rights and responsibilities to newly arrived individuals, particularly prioritizing women, children, and families. They will also support case management for identified vulnerabilities, assist in timely referrals for specific services, provide feedback on information materials, deliver psychological first aid as needed, and participate in capacity-building activities. The position requires flexibility and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of the population served.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess fluency in spoken and written Arabic and French, along with a good command of Italian. Previous experience in cultural mediation or interpretation is strongly preferred, as is experience in providing information sessions to migrants and asylum seekers. A solid understanding of the Italian legal system related to international protection procedures is essential. Experience working with GBV survivors and presumed victims of trafficking is also required, along with a background in delivering psychological first aid and basic psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support. Knowledge of survivor-centered and trauma-informed approaches, as well as child-centered approaches, is crucial. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to use digital tools for data entry and research is necessary. Candidates should demonstrate teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to foster a proactive environment, along with excellent communication and relational skills. Sensitivity to political and cultural contexts, along with qualities of patience, tact, and diplomacy, are essential.
