Job Posting Organization: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda and promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. Established to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus, UNEP plays a crucial role in keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Ecosystems Division of UNEP collaborates with international and national partners to provide technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, thereby strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and those with economies in transition. The Caribbean Regional Co-ordinating Unit (CAR/RCU), established in 1986 in Kingston, Jamaica, serves as the Secretariat for the Cartagena Convention and the Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP), which is administered by UNEP. This organization is dedicated to addressing environmental challenges in the Caribbean region and fostering sustainable development through collaborative efforts.
Job Overview: The University Volunteer position is integral to the Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) project, which is implemented by UNEP’s Cartagena Convention Secretariat and Caribbean Environment Program. The project aims to reduce plastic waste, primarily from terrestrial sources, in several Caribbean nations including Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Guyana, British Virgin Islands, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. The volunteer will lead social media and communications activities across these five project countries, focusing on raising awareness about marine litter and promoting circular economy solutions. The role requires maintaining social media channels, creating engaging content, and supporting the dissemination of best practices related to marine litter prevention. The volunteer will work closely with local partners and stakeholders to enhance community engagement and awareness on environmental issues, thereby contributing to the overall objectives of the PROMAR project.
Duties and Responsibilities: The University Volunteer will be responsible for maintaining established social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, by creating a minimum of 2-3 posts per week for each platform, curating images and short videos, and monitoring social media channels daily to foster an engaged community. The volunteer will also provide ad hoc support for the PROMAR website, including content updates and attending local events to report on them. Administrative tasks will include submitting quarterly reports on objectives and targets, attending monthly PROMAR meetings, and providing relevant updates. The volunteer will engage in various communications-related activities, such as note-taking and editing during virtual meetings, ensuring effective communication and documentation of project progress.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the University Volunteer position should possess strong communication skills, particularly in social media management and content creation. They should demonstrate creativity and adaptability, with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively. A good understanding of environmental issues, particularly marine litter and circular economy concepts, is essential. The volunteer should also exhibit professionalism, accountability, and self-management skills, enabling them to work independently while collaborating with project partners and stakeholders.
Educational Background: A background in communications, environmental science, social sciences, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates should have relevant academic qualifications that demonstrate their understanding of environmental issues and communication strategies. A degree or ongoing studies in a related discipline will be beneficial for fulfilling the responsibilities of this role effectively.
Experience: While prior experience in social media management or communications is advantageous, it is not strictly required. However, candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the needs of the project. Experience in volunteer work or involvement in environmental initiatives will be considered a plus, as it reflects a commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and social media content will be created in this language. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the Caribbean region may be considered an asset, enhancing the volunteer's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: This position is a volunteer role under the United Nations framework, and specific entitlements such as insurance coverage, Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA), and other benefits are provided. The role is expected to be full-time, and the volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Project Manager. The living conditions in Guyana are moderate, with access to essential services, but the volunteer should be aware of the local context, including climate-related risks and safety considerations.
