The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is a key Secretariat Department within the United Nations system, established to strengthen international human rights mechanisms. The OHCHR's mission includes enhancing equality, combating discrimination, and promoting accountability and the rule of law. It operates globally, focusing on integrating human rights into development and economic spheres, widening democratic spaces, and providing early warning and protection in conflict situations. The OHCHR is committed to promoting and protecting human rights for all individuals, regardless of their background, and works with various stakeholders to achieve these goals.

Job Overview:
The Assistant Human Rights Officer position is an international assignment within the Human Rights Council Branch of the OHCHR. The incumbent will report directly to the Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch and will be involved in supporting the operations of the Human Rights Council, which consists of 47 member states responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. The role is designed for candidates from developing economies, particularly those with disabilities, and aims to provide them with valuable experience in the field of human rights. The assignment is expected to last for six months, starting between May and October 2026, and candidates are encouraged to apply if their studies or skills align with the responsibilities of the position. The role requires a commitment to volunteerism and the principles of the United Nations, with a focus on learning and development throughout the assignment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Human Rights Officer will undertake a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch. Key responsibilities include assisting in the organization and providing substantive support for regular and special sessions of the Human Rights Council, as well as meetings of its subsidiary bodies. The incumbent will provide direct assistance to the Secretary of the Human Rights Council and contribute to drafting analytical summaries and notes on discussions held during sessions. Additional duties involve drafting correspondence and relevant texts related to the work of the Council and its mechanisms. The role also requires participation in UNV activities, promoting volunteerism, and contributing to the development of local volunteer initiatives. The expected outputs include a deepened understanding of the Human Rights Council's operations, advocacy for fair internship initiatives, and the application of an Age, Gender, and Diversity perspective in all activities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first degree from a university in a developing economy. The position is particularly suited for individuals who have a strong interest in human rights and international relations. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to the principles of volunteerism and possess the ability to work independently in a politically sensitive environment. Strong analytical and drafting skills are essential, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Candidates should also be adaptable and willing to engage in continuous learning and development throughout their assignment.

Educational Background:
A first degree from a recognized university is required for this position. Candidates are encouraged to have a background in human rights, international relations, law, or a related field that aligns with the responsibilities of the Assistant Human Rights Officer role. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of human rights issues and the functioning of the Human Rights Council.

Experience:
While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should ideally have some relevant experience in human rights, international law, or related fields. This could include internships, volunteer work, or academic projects that demonstrate a commitment to human rights and an understanding of the international human rights framework. The role is particularly aimed at young professionals or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in the field.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the United Nations. Knowledge of French, German, or Italian is advantageous, particularly given the location in Geneva, where French is predominantly spoken. Candidates who can communicate in multiple languages will have an added advantage in this multicultural environment.

Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer assignment with a duration of six months, contingent upon approval by the supervisor. The role is full-time and requires a commitment to the principles of volunteerism. The UN Volunteer entitlements include a monthly living allowance, entry lump sum, exit allowance, and comprehensive medical and life insurance. Volunteers are entitled to annual leave, sick leave, and learning leave, with specific details available on the UNV website.
