Job Overview:
The Intern will operate under the supervision of the Associate Expert (P2) of the Freshwater Ecosystems Unit (FEU) at UNEP, contributing to the high-level water agenda. The intern's role is crucial in supporting UNEP's initiatives related to freshwater ecosystems, particularly in the context of the Water Conference and other high-level water-related events. The intern will engage in collaborative efforts across teams and divisions to gather inputs that inform UNEP's engagement in these events, assist in producing briefing notes and resource kits, and support communication efforts to highlight UNEP's work in protecting freshwater ecosystems. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental policy and program management within a leading global organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support UNEP’s role as a co-convener of the Interactive Dialogue 'Water for the Planet' by contributing to the preparation of background materials.
  • Work collaboratively across teams and divisions to gather inputs that inform UNEP’s engagement in the Water Conference and other high-level water-related events.
  • Assist in the production of briefing notes and resource kits to advance UNEP strategic priorities in the lead-up to the Water Conference and other high-level water-related events.
  • Contribute to UNEP’s inputs to the High-Level Political Review (HLPF) SDG 6 review scheduled for July 202
  • Support the communication team in developing content that highlights UNEP’s work and leadership in protecting freshwater ecosystems ahead of the Water Conference.
  • Perform other tasks as needed to support the programme of work of the FEU and its partnerships.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: • Enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. programme; or • Enrolled in the final year of a bachelor's programme; or • Within one year after graduation from a Bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. programme in communications, public relations, graphic design, or equivalent. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate pleasant interpersonal skills, the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, and a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.

Educational Background:
A field of study closely related to the internship is required. While professional work experience is not mandatory, previous experience in programme management and/or public relations is desirable. Academic qualifications in hydrology, environment, natural resources management, or related areas are also considered advantageous.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, any experience in programme management or public relations is considered desirable. The internship is designed for individuals who are either currently enrolled in relevant academic programs or have recently graduated, thus focusing on candidates who are in the early stages of their professional careers.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
