Job Overview: The position of Consultant is integral to UNESCO's efforts in Peru, particularly in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The consultant will provide technical and strategic assistance in analyzing, developing, and strengthening public policies and governance mechanisms related to agrobiodiversity. This role emphasizes the integration of indigenous and local knowledge and the effective participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in decision-making processes. The consultant will work closely with various stakeholders, including governmental bodies, indigenous organizations, and academic institutions, to enhance capacities for sustainable resource management and biodiversity conservation. The consultant will also be involved in monitoring and reporting on the sustainable use and in-situ conservation of agrobiodiversity, ensuring that the contributions of indigenous knowledge are recognized and valued.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for a range of duties, including:
Strengthening the capacities of project partners in incorporating traditional knowledge and biocultural heritage into public policy formulation and monitoring related to in-situ conservation of agrobiodiversity.
Facilitating dialogues and knowledge exchanges among traditional knowledge holders, the scientific community, and decision-makers regarding agrobiodiversity conservation.
Analyzing information gaps and designing strategies for awareness-raising about biodiversity monitoring goals.
Implementing strategies for piloting key indicators related to biodiversity conservation.
Designing and testing tools to train youth in monitoring and reporting on agrobiodiversity conservation in their communities.
Supporting intersectoral dialogue among key sectors (agriculture, environment, culture) and assisting in the positioning of agrobiodiversity on national and subnational agendas.
Providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Environment regarding the implementation of biodiversity-related agreements.
Designing inclusive governance mechanisms to ensure effective participation of local communities in project execution.
Contributing to the reporting of project results and mobilizing resources for biodiversity conservation initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a professional background in social, environmental, agronomic, biological, political sciences, or related fields. A specialization or postgraduate studies in social sciences, environmental management, or intercultural studies is required. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience in implementing intercultural and intergenerational approaches in public policy design related to sustainable biodiversity use, as well as experience in leading components of multilateral cooperation projects focused on biodiversity conservation. Experience working directly with indigenous peoples and local communities on biodiversity conservation initiatives is essential, along with the ability to draft clear and objective technical reports. Knowledge of social safeguard systems and Peru's biodiversity-related legal frameworks is also required.
Educational Background: A professional degree in social sciences, environmental sciences, agronomy, biology, political science, or related fields is required. Candidates should also have completed specialization courses or postgraduate studies in relevant areas such as environmental management, social management, or intercultural studies.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience, particularly in processes that integrate intercultural and intergenerational perspectives into public policy design and implementation related to sustainable biodiversity use. Candidates should have experience in leading project components funded by multilateral cooperation focused on biodiversity conservation and should have worked directly with indigenous peoples and local communities.
Languages: Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, while intermediate proficiency in English is desirable. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages, particularly in professional and technical contexts.
Additional Notes: The contract will last approximately 11 months, subject to budget availability and satisfactory performance evaluation. The position is open to external candidates and does not include expectations for renewal or conversion to another type of contract. There is no medical coverage provided as part of this contract.
