Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer position is hosted by UNESCO's Regional Office for Eastern Africa and is based in the Kampala Antennae Office. The role contributes to the 'Support to Sustainable Tourism Value Chain in Uganda' project, which is a multi-partner initiative funded by the European Union. The project aims to enhance Uganda's appeal as a sustainable tourism destination while ensuring local communities benefit from tourism activities. The volunteer will focus on integrating cultural heritage, biodiversity conservation, community participation, gender equality, youth empowerment, and Indigenous knowledge systems into sustainable tourism development. The position involves supporting various activities, including community cultural mapping, developing tourism design guidelines, and implementing youth training programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UN Volunteer will undertake a variety of tasks under the supervision of the head of the UNESCO Uganda antenna office. Key responsibilities include:
  • Contributing to the planning, development, and implementation of project activities related to conservancies, protected landscapes, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism.
  • Supporting the administrative and operational management of project activities, including logistics planning and assistance at meetings, workshops, trainings, and missions.
  • Assisting in the preparation of project materials such as briefing notes, presentations, background documents, agendas, and reports.
  • Participating in internal and external coordination meetings, briefings, and consultations with partners, stakeholders, and beneficiaries.
  • Supporting outreach, communication, and visibility activities, including compiling content for reports and knowledge-sharing materials.
  • Assisting with the collection, organization, and analysis of project data, including gender- and youth-disaggregated information for monitoring and reporting purposes.
  • Carrying out any other related tasks as requested by the head of the UNESCO Uganda antenna office.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess a strong commitment to the values and principles of the United Nations. They should demonstrate accountability, adaptability, creativity, judgment, decision-making, planning, organizing, professionalism, and self-management. Additionally, candidates should have a background in sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, or related fields, and be able to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is essential for this position. Candidates should ideally hold a degree in fields such as tourism management, cultural studies, environmental science, social sciences, or a related discipline. Advanced degrees or specialized training in sustainable tourism or community development would be advantageous.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have some level of experience in project management, particularly in areas related to sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, or community engagement. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or in a volunteer capacity would be beneficial. Familiarity with the local context in Uganda and previous involvement in similar projects would be an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the working language of UNESCO and the primary language for communication in Uganda. Knowledge of local languages or other UN languages would be considered an advantage, as it may facilitate better communication with local communities and stakeholders.
