Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the UN Environment Assembly Coordinator. The primary functions of this position include supporting the organization of the UNEA Strategic Taskforce, preparing written materials such as background documentation and agendas, and taking notes for the file. The volunteer will also prepare presentations and briefing notes to support outreach efforts to partners, service providers, member states, and participants. Additionally, the role involves analyzing data related to travel and budget, developing communication materials, managing invitation letters, and supporting administrative tasks. The volunteer will also assist in organizing meetings of the Committee of Permanent Representatives and perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor. This position is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of the UN Environment Assembly and its related activities, which involve high-level participants and significant public engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include:
  • Supporting the organization of the UNEA Strategic Taskforce by preparing written materials such as background documentation and agendas.
  • Taking notes for the file during meetings and discussions.
  • Preparing presentations and briefing notes to facilitate outreach efforts to various stakeholders.
  • Analyzing data related to travel and budget to ensure efficient resource allocation.
  • Developing communication materials, including webpage entries and app notifications, to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Managing the preparation and distribution of invitation letters, tracking confirmations, and supporting registrations for events.
  • Assisting with administrative tasks such as preparing routing slips, payment requests, and procurement documentation.
  • Supporting the organization of meetings of the Committee of Permanent Representatives as needed.
  • Engaging in activities that promote volunteerism and contributing to UNV publications. 1
  • Participating in reflection activities and promoting local forms of volunteerism.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and be proficient in preparing presentations and documentation. Familiarity with data analysis and budget management is also essential. The ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and facilitate discussions is crucial for this role. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to the principles of volunteerism and the mission of UNEP.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in environmental studies, international relations, public administration, or a related field. A bachelor's degree is typically required, while a master's degree may be preferred for more advanced roles. Relevant coursework or training in project management, communication, or data analysis would be advantageous.

Experience:
Candidates should have some experience in administrative support, event organization, or project management. Previous experience working with international organizations or in a multicultural environment is highly desirable. Familiarity with the United Nations system and its operations would be beneficial, as well as experience in volunteerism or community engagement.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNEP. Knowledge of additional UN official languages, such as French or Spanish, would be considered an asset and could enhance communication with diverse stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration is specified as a limited period with the possibility of extensions based on funding availability and satisfactory performance. The position is classified as a volunteer role, and the UN Volunteer will receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) to cover basic needs. The VLA is calculated based on the cost of living in Nairobi and is adjusted monthly. Additional benefits include life, health, and disability insurance, as well as travel allowances for official duties.
